Report Interpretation

Overview

Goldman Sachs’ Week 39 China NEV chartbook tracks weekly brand orders, industry volumes and penetration, dealer discounts, and battery-material prices. It records weaker aggregate orders but continued penetration gains and launch-driven strength at selected brands.

Core views

The report’s central finding is that combined orders for key NEV OEMs continued to weaken in 2026 Week 39 (September 21-27), falling 7% week on week and 58% year on year. This aggregate decline contrasted with relative strength at BYD, Geely and Nio, whose orders increased 25%, 8% and 2% week on week, respectively. Goldman Sachs attributes their outperformance mainly to new-model launches, citing BYD’s Denza Z9S as an example. On a year-to-date order basis, Nio, XPeng and HIMA were described as relatively defensive, with year-on-year changes of +8%, -3% and -6%, respectively. Industry delivery data nevertheless showed rising NEV adoption. According to CPCA data for September 1-20, passenger-vehicle retail volume was 878k units, down 22% year on year but up 8% month on month, while wholesale volume was 1,001k units, down 19% year on year and up 21% month on month. NEV retail volume was 596k units, down 9% year on year and up 14% month on month; NEV wholesale volume was 740k units, up 8% year on year and 25% month on month. As a result, NEV retail and wholesale penetration reached 67.9% and 73.9%, respectively, compared with 65.3% and 63.4% in August. Pricing indicators showed no week-on-week change in the average NEV dealer discount, while ICE discounts widened slightly. As of September 26, average NEV dealer discount versus MSRP was 7.85%, unchanged from September 19 and below 7.96% a year earlier. BYD’s average discount was 4.06%, unchanged week on week and below 5.76% a year earlier. ICE dealer discount reached 20.27%, versus 20.21% a week earlier and 21.66% a year earlier. Upstream battery-material conditions softened: battery-grade lithium carbonate declined 7.7% week on week to RMB125.0k per ton, while prismatic LFP and NCM cell prices were stable week on week. The report flags forthcoming OEM volume releases, CPCA data and several model launches as near-term catalysts for subsequent tracking.

Analysis framework

The chartbook compiles weekly brand-order data, CPCA retail and wholesale volume data, dealer discount trackers and battery-material price data. It compares week-on-week, year-on-year and month-on-month changes to assess demand momentum, NEV adoption, competitive pricing and upstream cost conditions.
