Report Interpretation

Overview

This earnings review examines Ping An Bank's Q226 results. UBS finds that profit growth accelerated modestly and beat its estimate through lower costs, but revenue weakened as prior-year trading and investment income created a difficult comparison base; it retains a Neutral rating.

Core views

Ping An Bank reported Q226 net profit growth of 3.7% year on year, accelerating from 3.0% in Q1 and slightly ahead of UBS estimates. UBS attributes the modest beat primarily to lower-than-expected operating expenses, while revenue was in line with its forecast. Revenue declined 0.9% year on year, compared with 4.7% growth in Q1, chiefly because Q225 trading and investment income created a high comparison base. UBS expects that base effect to ease in the second half. Net interest income rose 2.3% year on year and accelerated sequentially from a 0.5% year-on-year decline in H1 as net interest margin increased 2bp quarter on quarter to 1.81%. Lower deposit and interbank funding costs supported the margin: deposit cost fell 6bp quarter on quarter, aided by repricing and a 0.7 percentage-point quarterly increase in demand deposits to 35%. Asset yields remained under pressure, however, with loan and investment yields down 7bp and 6bp quarter on quarter. Corporate loan yield had largely stabilized, while retail loan yield fell 14bp to 4.38%. Fee income was weaker than UBS expected. Net fee income fell 4.8% year on year despite a 17% rise in wealth-management fees, driven by mutual-fund and wealth-management-product distribution. Other fees declined 10.3%, likely reflecting bank-card and settlement-and-clearing fees. Other non-interest income declined 6.8% year on year, although UBS viewed this as slightly better than feared given the high base. Cost control supported profitability: OPEX fell 4.9% year on year and pre-provision operating profit grew 1.1%, though the momentum softened from Q1. Impairment charges declined 0.6% year on year; UBS estimates credit cost at 138bp, down 3bp. A broadly flat effective tax rate quarter on quarter, with lower tax expense than UBS expected, provided an additional lift to bottom-line growth. The bank declared an interim DPS of Rmb0.249, implying an 18.8% payout ratio. Balance-sheet growth was subdued. Loans grew 1.3% year on year but fell 0.4% quarter on quarter, with slight declines in corporate and retail loans and discounted bills. Asset quality was broadly stable: the NPL ratio remained 1.05% and the coverage ratio 219.6%. Mortgage, consumption-loan and credit-card NPL ratios declined to 0.22%, 1.24% and 2.23%, respectively, while the operating-loan NPL ratio increased 11bp to 1.15%. UBS notes that the Q1 increase in 90-day-plus overdue loans had not yet been reflected in NPLs. Property-sector corporate lending declined to Rmb198.4bn and its NPL ratio fell 2bp to 2.15%; CET-1 fell 19bp quarter on quarter to 9.32%. UBS expects a slightly positive market reaction. Its 12-month Neutral rating is based on forecast price appreciation of 3.5% plus a 3.7% dividend yield, for a 7.2% forecast stock return versus a 6.8% market-return assumption. The Rmb11.50 price target is based on a target P/BV multiple.

Analysis framework

UBS compares Q226 results with its own expectations and prior-quarter and prior-year trends, then traces profit performance through revenue, funding costs, operating expenses, credit costs, tax and asset quality. It values the bank using a target price-to-book-value multiple and frames the rating through forecast stock return relative to its market-return assumption.

Impact & implications

UBS sees the results as modestly supportive because cost control, a NIM rebound and lower tax expense lifted profit growth. However, slower revenue, weak fee income, subdued loan growth, retail-yield compression and the increase in operating-loan NPLs keep the report's 12-month stance Neutral.

Risks

  • UBS cites downside macroeconomic risk and resulting asset-quality risk for China’s banking sector.
  • Tight monetary, capital and market-oriented interest-rate policies could constrain credit growth and NIM.
  • Industrial policies, including those affecting real estate, could affect banking operations.

What to watch

  • Whether the high-base effect from Q225 trading and investment income eases in H2 as UBS expects.
  • The progression of 90-day-plus overdue loans into reported NPLs and the operating-loan NPL ratio.
  • Loan growth, retail-loan yield pressure, funding-cost reductions and CET-1 capital trends.
