  • OctQ revenue guidance expected at $10.5bn+, versus $9.5bn Street.
  • CY2026 system-shipment growth forecast rises to 44%.
  • CY2026 EPS estimate rises to $14.60 and CY2027 EPS to $20.26.

  • A $75bn+ 2027 DRAM WFE and $100bn+ 2028 outcome would challenge the downgrade thesis.

Report Interpretation

Overview

Morgan Stanley examines three issues ahead of Applied Materials' results: the OctQ shipment guide, the path for gross margins, and 2027 DRAM wafer-fab-equipment spending. It raises estimates on stronger systems demand but retains Equal-weight after a downgrade, with the target price essentially unchanged at $646.

Core views

Morgan Stanley expects AMAT to guide OctQ revenue to $10.5bn or more, matching its estimate and exceeding the Street's $9.5bn. Peer guidance has set a high comparison point: Lam Research guided SepQ revenue growth of 21% quarter on quarter and Morgan Stanley estimates 32% shipment growth, while Tokyo Electron guided 33% system-shipment growth. The report does not view 30%+ quarter-on-quarter AMAT shipment growth as the appropriate base-case hurdle. AMAT has outgrown Lam since the January quarter, and Morgan Stanley forecasts 20% OctQ shipment growth followed by 9% in January, producing 44% systems growth in 2026—above the prior 43% high in 2021. It therefore sees upside to AMAT's 30%+ CY2026 semiconductor-systems guide. On margins, the report sees no structural reason AMAT could not articulate a path toward gross margin in the mid-50% range by the end of the decade, broadly aligning with Lam's stated ambition. Lam has cited price increases from new products and shifting most manufacturing to Malaysia as supports for its own mid-50% target. Morgan Stanley does not yet model an immediate step-up for AMAT, however, and notes a key analytical risk: it may be underestimating the margin benefit Lam receives from its Malaysia manufacturing shift. Its base case projects non-GAAP gross margin of 51.9% in CY2028. The central challenge to the Equal-weight thesis is DRAM WFE. Morgan Stanley's prior view was that NAND WFE would outgrow DRAM WFE in 2027, but Lam and Tokyo Electron have described DRAM as the fastest-growing end market in 2027 after significant outgrowth in 2026. AMAT has indicated near-term DRAM WFE well above twice NAND WFE; for DRAM to outgrow overall WFE, the report estimates it would need to reach at least roughly three times NAND WFE, or $70-75bn+ versus its $24bn 2027 NAND WFE estimate. Morgan Stanley is still working on the DRAM outlook, but states that $75bn+ DRAM WFE in 2027, absorption of 40% bit-supply growth without disruption, and visibility to $100bn+ spending in 2028 would leave AMAT exceptionally well positioned and mean its downgrade thesis was incorrect. The stronger demand outlook leads Morgan Stanley to raise its CY2026 revenue/EPS forecast from $36.9bn/$13.93 to $38.7bn/$14.60 and CY2027 from $46.2bn/$18.41 to $50.5bn/$20.26. It raises modeled system-shipment growth to 44%/35% for CY2026/CY2027 from 37%/28%. Yet it lowers the CY2028 target multiple from 30x to 27x, now only one turn below Lam rather than four turns, resulting in a $646 target price versus $647 previously. The base valuation is about 27x CY2028 EPS of $23.94, reflecting DRAM growth prospects but concerns about foundry-logic market-share loss. Morgan Stanley says AMAT trades at a material discount to Lam and KLA because of execution and China market-share concerns. It expects AMAT to gain share in 2026, but because its 2027 growth forecast is in line with broader WFE, it does not expect the valuation discount to narrow near term. AMAT has the highest DRAM portfolio mix among the three—31% in CY2026 versus Lam's 24% and KLA's 30%—and is most exposed to greenfield wafer additions. The report sees DRAM as the fastest-growing end market in 2026 but the slowest-growing in 2027.

Analysis framework

Morgan Stanley frames the report around three pre-results questions, compares AMAT's shipment and margin outlook with Lam Research and Tokyo Electron, tests its DRAM WFE assumptions against implied NAND WFE levels, and translates the revised operating outlook into revenue, EPS, margin, and P/E-based target-price estimates.

Methodology notes

  • Industry AnalysisSupply-demand framework

DRAM and NAND wafer-fab-equipment demand outlook

The report assesses AMAT through expected DRAM WFE spending, NAND WFE, bit-supply growth, and the ability of the market to absorb new memory supply.

  • Industry AnalysisVolume-price decomposition

System shipment growth and gross-margin progression

Morgan Stanley separates the outlook into shipment growth and margin development to explain changes in revenue and earnings estimates.

  • Valuation methodsP/E and PEG Valuation

    P/E multiple target-price framework

The $646 target is based on roughly 27x CY2028 EPS of $23.94, with the discount to Lam reflecting growth and market-share considerations.

Asset mapping & comparison

Structured mapping from thesis to named assets (strengths, weaknesses, peers, risks).

Growth is forecast to be in line with broader WFE in 2027, limiting near-term valuation-discount narrowing.
    Comparison
AMAT's CY2026 DRAM mix is 31%, versus Lam's 24% and KLA's 30%; the target multiple is one turn below Lam.
    Risks
Widespread restrictions on equipment shipments and services to China; loss of share with key customers including Samsung and TSMC; weaker 2027 DRAM WFE or foundry-logic headwinds.

Key data

  • Expected OctQ revenue guide$10.5bn+Versus Morgan Stanley estimate of $10.5bn and Street estimate of $9.5bn.
  • CY2026 system shipment growth44%Raised from 37%; based on 20% OctQ and 9% January-quarter growth.
  • CY2026 revenue / EPS estimate$38.7bn / $14.60Raised from $36.9bn / $13.93.
  • CY2027 revenue / EPS estimate$50.5bn / $20.26Raised from $46.2bn / $18.41.
  • DRAM WFE challenge scenario$75bn+ in 2027 and $100bn+ in 2028Would require absorption of 40% bit-supply growth without disruption and would invalidate the downgrade thesis.
  • CY2028 target valuation27x CY2028 EPS of $23.94Reduced from 30x; one-turn discount to Lam.
  • Base-case CY2028 revenue growth / gross margin13.3% / 51.9%Morgan Stanley's base-case operating assumptions.

Impact & implications

The report views AMAT as strongly positioned for DRAM-led systems growth in 2026, but sees its 2027 growth as broadly in line with WFE and does not expect the valuation discount to peers to narrow soon. Sustained, unusually strong DRAM WFE spending would materially improve that conclusion.

Risks

  • Widespread restrictions on equipment shipments and services to China could pressure AMAT.
  • AMAT could lose market share with key customers such as Samsung and TSMC.
  • DRAM WFE could slow in 2027 while leading-edge logic faces headwinds from foundries reducing ambitions.
  • Morgan Stanley may be underestimating the gross-margin benefit Lam receives from shifting manufacturing to Malaysia.

What to watch

  • AMAT's OctQ revenue and system-shipment guidance, particularly whether shipment growth approaches or exceeds 20% quarter on quarter.
  • Management commentary on a path toward mid-50% gross margin by the end of the decade.
  • Evidence on 2027 DRAM WFE, including whether spending reaches $75bn+ and whether 40% bit-supply growth can be absorbed.
  • Visibility into 2028 DRAM WFE spending of $100bn+.
  • AMAT's execution in logic architecture inflections, including GAA and backside power, and market-share trends with major customers.
