Report Interpretation

Overview

Morgan Stanley maintains an Overweight and Top Pick view on Nokia. Its central case is that AI and cloud data-center investment, reinforced by Nokia's Infinera acquisition and capacity expansion, can drive Network Infrastructure growth beyond currently guided levels, while Mobile Infrastructure stabilizes after customer losses.

Core views

Morgan Stanley remains bullish on Nokia's fundamentals and long-term opportunity, while acknowledging an extremely volatile AI-equity backdrop. Nokia shares had risen about 50% year-to-date but were more than 40% below their June highs. The report attributes the broader AI-infrastructure sell-off principally to technical factors rather than fundamental weakness, while noting Nokia's decline was more severe than that of US optical peers because European optical-networking equities are scarce and investor positioning had become crowded. The firm retains its Overweight rating, Top Pick designation, and €14.00 target price. The main growth thesis is Nokia's exposure to data-center infrastructure supporting cloud and AI expansion. Morgan Stanley views Nokia as a key beneficiary of hyperscaler capital expenditure, with the Infinera acquisition increasing its exposure to hyperscaler customers and the rapidly growing optical market. The €2.8bn Q2 order book, nearly three times the Q1 level, is presented as evidence of exceptionally strong demand and as support for future revenue growth. The binding constraint is supply: the second San Jose fab is expected to ramp in late 2026 and into 2027, while Pennsylvania testing and packaging capacity is expected to rise tenfold by the end of Q3. If these additions are executed successfully, Morgan Stanley believes 2027 optical-plus-IP guidance could exceed the 2026 target of 18-20% growth by 22% in its estimates, and the Network Infrastructure division's medium-term 6-8% revenue CAGR guidance could prove conservative. The report expects Network Infrastructure to be the earnings engine. It forecasts divisional sales rising from €8.607bn in 2026e to €10.033bn in 2027e and €11.739bn in 2028e, while comparable operating profit rises from €998mn to €1.483bn and €2.152bn. At group level, Morgan Stanley forecasts revenue of €20.276bn, €21.652bn and €23.358bn for 2026e-28e, adjusted EBIT of €2.422bn, €2.977bn and €3.671bn, and diluted EPS of €0.27, €0.42 and €0.53. The firm expects adjusted operating margin to improve from 11.9% in 2026e to 13.7% in 2027e and 15.7% in 2028e. Its base case has operating profit slightly above the company's 2028 guidance of more than €4bn; the bull case assumes materially stronger Network Infrastructure growth and North American and European share gains, while the bear case assumes hardware problems, disappointing product launches and below-market growth. Morgan Stanley made only limited changes to its underlying outlook. Reclassifying Fixed Wireless Access CPE and Enterprise Campus Edge as discontinued operations raises EBIT estimates by low single digits, with an annual positive EBIT impact of up to €50mn. However, newly announced Q2 restructuring plans reduce 2026 EPS by just over 10%. The revised 2026 EBIT forecast of €2.4bn remains slightly above the midpoint of Nokia's €2.1bn-€2.6bn guidance range. Revenue estimates were reduced by 2.4%, 2.3% and 2.1% for 2026e-28e versus the previous forecast, yet comparable operating-profit estimates were lifted by 0.9%, 0.6% and 0.5%. Valuation supports the unchanged target in the report's view. Nokia trades at 20x 2027e P/E and 15x 2028e P/E, which Morgan Stanley characterizes as good value for a company in transformation. The €14.00 target is derived from a DCF using long-term growth of 3% and a WACC stated as 9% in the summary framework and 9.3% in the detailed valuation exhibit. The scenario framework shows €19.00 in the euro bull case, €14.00 base case, and €6.50 bear case; for the ADR, the respective targets are US$22.50, US$16.50, and US$7.50. One ADR represents one NOKIA.HE share, with the euro target converted to US dollars. Risks center on uncertain returns on AI capital expenditure and investor concern about AI-stock valuations, as well as Nokia's delivery of new San Jose capacity and four digital signal processors in 2027. Mobile Infrastructure remains challenging following the loss of AT&T business, and Ericsson's margin weakness is a negative read-across. Morgan Stanley sees partial mitigation because Nokia's Mobile Networks business is smaller (€11bn of 2025 sales versus €14bn at Ericsson), has lower North American exposure and only one major customer there, TMUS, and is earlier in its cost-cutting process. Additional risks include faster-than-expected telecom-spending deceleration, a slower Network Infrastructure recovery, unmitigated cost inflation, foreign-exchange and tariff exposure from North American revenue concentration, and broader sentiment toward AI names.

Analysis framework

Morgan Stanley combines an operating forecast by division with demand, capacity and market-share analysis. It links AI and cloud data-center spending to optical and IP demand, tests the implications of Nokia's capacity ramp, updates earnings forecasts for discontinued operations and restructuring, and values the shares with a discounted-cash-flow model. It also presents bull, base and bear scenarios and uses options-implied volatility data to illustrate approximate risk-neutral scenario probabilities.

Impact & implications

Morgan Stanley argues that successful capacity expansion could allow Nokia to convert unusually strong optical and IP demand into growth above current guidance, making Network Infrastructure the key driver of earnings and valuation. The report views the present valuation as attractive for this transformation but makes the case contingent on execution and stabilization in Mobile Infrastructure.

Risks

  • AI-stock valuations and uncertainty over returns on future AI capital expenditure could sustain market nervousness.
  • Execution of the San Jose fab expansion and delivery of four digital signal processors in 2027 are critical.
  • Mobile Infrastructure performance could deteriorate, as indicated by margin weakness at Ericsson.
  • Telecom spending could decelerate faster than expected, Network Infrastructure could recover more slowly, and cost inflation may not be offset.
  • North American exposure leaves Nokia sensitive to foreign-exchange movements and tariffs.
  • Hardware issues, disappointing product launches, or below-market growth could lead to market-share losses.

What to watch

  • The ramp of the second San Jose fab in late 2026 and through 2027.
  • The planned tenfold increase in Pennsylvania test and packaging capacity by the end of Q3.
  • Whether optical-plus-IP growth and Network Infrastructure guidance move above current targets.
  • Delivery of four digital signal processors in 2027.
  • The pace of Mobile Infrastructure stabilization after the AT&T business loss.
  • Hyperscaler data-center demand, telecom spending, and broader AI-equity market sentiment.
