Report Interpretation

Overview

This edition of The 720 is a global research roundup rather than a single-company report. It reviews earnings, management discussions and sector observations across technology, financials, consumer, resources, industrials, healthcare and India macro, while separately examining the market implications of a less transparent Federal Reserve.

Core views

SK Hynix is highlighted as a Buy following an earlier-than-expected W40tn share buyback and cancellation, equal to roughly 3.3% of issued shares. Goldman Sachs expects the lower share count to lift EPS and support the share price. Management also raised its 2025-2027 shareholder-return target to at least 50% of cumulative free cash flow, which the report reads as confidence in the memory upcycle and cash-generation capacity. Goldman raises 2026-2028 EPS estimates by 4-10%, reflecting the announced action and an assumption of further buybacks, while retaining a 12-month target price of W3,500,000. On Fed transparency, Goldman Sachs presents differing expert views rather than a single directional conclusion. Former Fed governors Donald Kohn and Stephen Miran and Goldman Sachs economist Jan Hatzius agree that rigid, “Odyssean” forward guidance—committing policymakers to a preset policy path—can create policy mistakes and is rarely appropriate. Hatzius and Kohn argue that clearer communication of the Fed's reaction function helps markets anticipate and price policy changes, speeding monetary-policy transmission. Miran sees a less clear practical boundary between transparency and a commitment to a path. Goldman Sachs economists and strategists find that less transparency raises market volatility; the unresolved issue is whether that volatility merely adds noise or improves market signals. Goldman Sachs remains Buy-rated on Sumitomo Electric after a discussion with its president and COO indicated very strong demand for optical fibers, wiring products, devices and indium phosphide substrates. The company is considering further optical-capacity expansion and seeks to reduce the associated risk through three- to five-year contracts with defined supply and purchase commitments. Development of co-packaged optics with US customers is progressing, which the report says supports the company's technological advantage. The 12-month target price is ¥3,300. For Hong Kong Exchanges, Goldman Sachs reviews a strong second quarter in which core profit beat its estimate by 7%. Better-than-expected cash-equities revenue offset weaker equity-derivatives revenue. Management described a robust IPO pipeline that continues to convert into listings, which Goldman Sachs sees as a basis for average daily turnover growth in the second half. It raises FY26-FY29 operating-expense estimates by 3% for talent and IT investment supporting a multi-asset ecosystem and fixed-income and commodities expansion, fine-tunes revenue estimates, and keeps its 12-month target price at HK$540. The report also notes that HKEX trades at 26x one-year forward P/E, below its 33x mid-cycle P/E. AIA's 1H26 results contain a slight 2Q Value of New Business miss, but Goldman Sachs expects only a muted share-price reaction because sequential growth in the Mainland Chinese Visitors segment and a 15% year-on-year rise in OPAT outweighed it. OPAT beat Goldman Sachs' estimate by 5%. Hong Kong VONB slowed to implied low-single-digit growth in 2Q because of a high MCV comparison base, while domestic growth remained strong and ASEAN markets exceeded expectations. Mainland China VONB increased 26% year-on-year at actual exchange rates, and OPAT per share is tracking well ahead of the 2023-2026 growth target. The 12-month target price is HK$97. Full Truck Alliance reported 2Q26 revenue and net-profit beats, driven by resilient transaction-service growth and higher freight-brokerage revenue. However, management's second-half order-volume outlook softened because of weather-related disruption since July. Goldman Sachs raises FY26-FY28 revenue forecasts by up to 9% on brokerage revenue, but reduces adjusted net-profit forecasts by 1-7% for slower order growth and cuts the 12-month target price to US$11.7 from US$12.5. In consumer coverage, China Resources Beer retains a Buy rating but has its 12-month target price reduced to HK$30.1 from HK$35.15 after in-line 1H26 results. Goldman Sachs lowers 2026-2028E sales estimates by about 2% and recurring-net-profit forecasts by 4-6%, citing a weaker-than-expected spirits recovery and packaging-cost pressure. It nonetheless expects continued top-line outperformance in 2H26, supported by the product portfolio and further scaling of sub-premium-and-above offerings. Yankershop Food's sales exceeded Goldman Sachs' 2Q26 expectation by 2.3%, reaching Rmb1,488mn, but net profit missed because higher branding and promotional spending lifted the selling-expense ratio. Gross margin rose 1.7 percentage points year-on-year to 32.6%, while operating margin fell to 15.0% as SG&A increased. Goldman Sachs remains Buy-rated and seeks further clarification on channel investment, brand strategy and emerging-channel margins. For Giant Biogene, Goldman Sachs expects sequential sales acceleration and margin recovery in the second half after management reiterated guidance for 10% full-year revenue growth and flat net profit. First-half margins were affected by front-loaded brand investment and higher traffic costs, but management expects a more normal selling-expense ratio and better product mix. New Comfy-brand products and expansion of the Collgene medical-aesthetics business, including the newly launched 753 Collagen Injection, are expected to support growth. The 12-month target price is HK$33. Goldman Sachs also keeps a Buy view on Godrej Consumer Products after meeting its new CEO: the company is maintaining strategic investment while sharpening distribution, supply-chain and marketing execution in India, expanding into home-care categories and scaling incense sticks and liquid vaporizers. Its 12-month target price remains Rs1,175. In resources and industrials, Iluka Resources' 1H26 EBITDA was broadly in line with expectations, which Goldman Sachs considers the trough of the mineral-sands earnings cycle. It lowers 2026-2028E EBITDA by 6-11% for higher corporate costs, inventory-unwind adjustments and a more conservative 2028 Eneabba refinery ramp-up assumption. The Buy view remains based on base-case valuation, zircon-price momentum, Balranald commissioning, Eneabba's planned mid-2027 schedule and a binding rare-earth offtake agreement with a global automaker; the 12-month target price is A$8.4. SGH is reinstated at Buy with a 12-month SOTP-based target price of A$49.00. Goldman Sachs expects FY27e EBIT growth to remain below the company's 10% target algorithm but forecasts low-double-digit growth from FY28e, driven by WesTrac capital sales, price-led utilisation at Coates and Boral self-help. Group underlying EBIT forecasts are reduced by 4%, 1% and 1% for FY27e-FY29e due to weaker near-term WesTrac and a softer first half at Coates, while balance-sheet optionality for M&A remains. Goldman Sachs sees Anritsu entering a potentially significant three-year earnings-expansion phase as demand for generative-AI data-center optical transceivers overlaps with 6G test-equipment demand. Following a CFO call, it sees a high probability of an FY3/27 sales and profit guidance beat on strong Test & Measurement orders. Management reports growing 800G volumes and accelerating demand for higher-margin 1.6T products; 6G R&D shipments should start before commercial rollout in 2030. The 12-month target price is ¥5,400. In India aerospace and defense, field-trip findings indicate firmer sector conditions and easing execution concerns at Hindustan Aeronautics. Goldman Sachs expects HAL aircraft deliveries to the Indian Air Force and GE engine supplies to improve, with Tejas Mk1A deliveries scheduled from September 2026 and 20-22 engines likely in FY27. Sansera Engineering and JK Maini are expanding capacity and moving into more complex structural parts to capture domestic and export demand; Goldman Sachs maintains Buy ratings on HAL and Sansera. In healthcare, Moderna remains Neutral despite positive interim Phase 3 INTerpath-001 results for intismeran plus Keytruda in adjuvant melanoma. Goldman Sachs views the statistically significant, clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free and distant-metastasis-free survival, together with a benign safety profile, as an initial opening for Moderna's oncology business. It raises the probability of success to 100% in melanoma and 85% in non-small-cell lung cancer, increases global peak-sales estimates for both indications, and lifts the 12-month target price to $120 from $67. Estee Lauder remains Buy-rated after FQ4 results exceeded elevated expectations, including 5% organic sales growth and 330 basis points of EBIT-margin expansion. Goldman Sachs raises FY27-29 EBIT estimates by about 4%, supported by higher margin guidance, above-consensus FY27 EPS guidance, PRGP savings, product innovation, improving China trends and a return to organic sales growth in North America; the target price rises to $112 from $100. On India macro, Goldman Sachs reads the August 2026 RBI Monetary Policy Committee minutes as more hawkish than the Governor's recent policy statement. Members noted that food- and fuel-led inflation could create second-round effects, while core-goods inflation appears to be firming. Broader price pressure would be required for immediate action, but Goldman Sachs continues to forecast 50bp of cumulative RBI rate hikes: 25bp in December 2026 and 25bp in February 2027. Its global labor-market analysis finds broadly similar AI adoption across developed markets but labor-market effects concentrated in a narrow group of industries and workers. France and the US have adoption rates around 20%, and AI-exposure scores have been negatively correlated with job-openings growth since the second half of 2022. A 10% occupational AI exposure is associated with only a 0.1 percentage-point drag to annual headcount growth in France, Canada and the US, with negligible effects elsewhere; effects are more evident in highly exposed subsectors such as call centers, management consulting and advertising, especially for entry-level employees.

Analysis framework

Goldman Sachs combines earnings reviews, management and CFO discussions, a sector field trip, valuation and estimate updates, and macroeconomic analysis. Company conclusions are based on reported results, operating drivers, guidance, forecast revisions and stated price targets; the macro sections evaluate policy communication, inflation signals, AI adoption and observed labor-market relationships.
