Report Interpretation

Overview

This monthly US sales update examines Hyundai Motor and Kia's July 2026 volume, market-share and powertrain performance. Goldman Sachs argues that hybrid demand remains the key source of their relative outperformance, and it sees Kia as the stronger investment case.

Core views

Hyundai Motor and Kia together sold 165,284 vehicles in the US in July, up 6.2% month on month and 5.0% year on year, while total industry demand was broadly flat sequentially at 1,380,088 units and down 1.5% year on year. Hyundai Motor delivered 89,427 units, up 5.1% month on month and 3.7% year on year, and Kia delivered 75,857 units, up 7.6% and 6.7%, respectively. Year to date, Hyundai Motor's US retail sales were up 2.9% and Kia's were up 3.9%; this compares with their 2026 guidance for 0.5% North American wholesale volume growth for Hyundai Motor and 4.7% US retail growth for Kia. The sales performance translated into a combined 12.0% July US market share, up 0.7 percentage points both month on month and year on year and in line with Goldman Sachs' 2026 assumption. Hyundai Motor's share reached 6.5%, up 0.3ppt on both comparisons, while Kia's reached 5.5%, up 0.4ppt. The report identifies US hybrid-electric-vehicle demand as the principal driver of this outperformance: industry HEV volume rose 26.1% YoY to 217,494 units, whereas BEV volume fell 41.8% YoY to 77,406 units. Hyundai Motor's July HEV volume grew 34.8% YoY to 22,379 units and Kia's rose 107.6% YoY to 20,502 units. Their combined HEV volume was 42,881 units, up 62.0% YoY, yielding a 19.7% HEV market share, up 0.7ppt month on month and 4.4ppt year on year. HEVs represented 25.0% of Hyundai Motor's July volume and 27.0% of Kia's. By contrast, combined BEV volume was down 40.5% YoY and combined BEV mix was 4.4%, down 3.3ppt YoY, underscoring the importance of the favorable hybrid mix. Incentives remained below the industry average of $3,194 per vehicle. Hyundai Motor spent $2,986 per car, up 3.0% month on month but down 12.0% YoY; Kia spent $3,061, down 12.6% sequentially but up 3.7% YoY. Goldman Sachs argues that Kia's US and other-market growth, favorable powertrain mix and strong margin profile support relative strength among legacy automakers. It considers Kia's valuation near peer multiples inexpensive given those attributes and Kia's exposure to robotics through its Boston Dynamics stake. The report retains Buy on Kia and Neutral on Hyundai Motor. For valuation, Goldman Sachs sets Hyundai Motor's 12-month W600,000 target price using an 11.0x target P/E applied to 2027E–2028E EPS. Kia's W240,000 12-month target uses a 9.1x target P/E on 2027E–2028E EPS. The report notes potential upside from continued KRW weakness against the USD and better-than-expected Boston Dynamics Atlas deployment or Hyundai Motor Group autonomous-driving execution; slower execution in these areas could cause a de-rating.

Analysis framework

Goldman Sachs reviews monthly US sales, market share, powertrain mix and incentives against month-ago, year-ago and year-to-date levels, then relates the results to each company's 2026 volume guidance. It uses the relative strength of hybrid demand and company-specific mix to explain performance, and values each company by applying a target P/E multiple to 2027E–2028E EPS.
