Report Interpretation

Overview

This earnings review argues that AMD’s accelerating Data Center business materially increases its medium-term earnings potential, led by EPYC server CPUs and Instinct GPUs. J.P. Morgan raises forecasts and its target price but keeps a Neutral rating because the valuation already reflects much of the opportunity and the first rack-scale AI ramp carries meaningful execution and margin risk.

Core views

AMD delivered a 2Q26 beat driven by Data Center. Revenue was $11.54B, versus $11.31B consensus, up 50% year on year and 13% quarter on quarter. Data Center revenue of $6.72B, or 58.2% of total revenue, rose 107% year on year and 16% sequentially. The report attributes the strength to EPYC server processors and Instinct accelerators: server CPU revenue grew more than 70% year on year across cloud and enterprise, while Data Center GPU revenue rose about 17% quarter on quarter and 190% year on year to about $2.8B on continued MI350 adoption. Gross margin reached 56%, expanding about 70 basis points sequentially as the Data Center mix increased. The central thesis is that AMD’s Data Center growth can substantially outpace overall AI-infrastructure spending in CY27. Management’s framing implies server CPU revenue growth above 70% year on year from a higher base and Data Center segment growth well above 100% year on year. J.P. Morgan views this, together with the higher total-addressable-market framework presented at AAI26, as evidence that AMD can reach a materially higher earnings-power level than management had previously articulated. Supply additions are expected to accelerate the server CPU trajectory from 3Q through 4Q26 and into CY27, supporting continued year-on-year share gains over the medium term. The report notes a likely temporary sequential share loss to Intel in 2Q, as AMD server revenue grew about 16-17% quarter on quarter versus Intel’s roughly 29%, which it attributes to Intel’s one-time Granite Rapids supply wave and higher average selling prices rather than a lasting change in AMD’s competitive trajectory. AI accelerator execution is the main source of both upside and risk. Helios/MI450 shipments are expected to begin at the end of 3Q26, ramp more meaningfully in 4Q26, and step up again in 1H27; management said customer pull was ahead of initial forecasts. The customer base is expanding beyond the original OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic anchors, and engagement on MI500 is already underway. AMD raised 2Q capital expenditure to $808M from $389M in 1Q, specifically for outsourced semiconductor assembly and test equipment consignment supporting the Venice ramp. However, J.P. Morgan stresses that AMD’s first rack-scale ramp has meaningful execution risk over the coming quarters, while the higher MI450 mix is likely to create more pronounced gross-margin dilution as volume scales through 4Q26 and 1H27. The report expects other businesses to partly offset AI-GPU margin pressure. Embedded returned to double-digit year-on-year growth for the first time in more than three years and is expected to show strong double-digit sequential growth in 3Q as embedded x86 design wins ramp and end-market demand remains broad-based. Client is expected to be only slightly up in 3Q, with mobile strength partly offset by desktop weakness from memory and component pass-through. Gaming is expected to decline sharply in CY26 and remain depressed in CY27 because of the console-cycle tail. J.P. Morgan also flags potential dilution from OpenAI and Meta warrants beginning in 2H27. For 3Q26, management guided revenue to $13.0B, up 41% year on year and 13% quarter on quarter, above Street consensus of $12.5B. Gross margin is guided flat at about 56%, slightly below the 56.2% consensus and below the buy-side expectations J.P. Morgan heard before earnings. The report expects very strong double-digit sequential Data Center growth, strong double-digit Embedded growth, modest Client growth, and a strong double-digit Gaming decline. J.P. Morgan raises its estimates and establishes a Dec-27 price target of $550, up from its prior Dec-26 target of $385. The target uses a 30-33x peer P/E range, with 32x applied to $17.20 in annualized 2H27 EPS. Its forecast calls for revenue of $50.53B in FY26E, $84.04B in FY27E and $115.12B in FY28E; adjusted EPS is projected at $7.25, $14.38 and $21.80, respectively. Despite the stronger growth and forecast framework, J.P. Morgan remains Neutral because it sees limited upside to the new target and believes the current share price already meaningfully reflects the multi-year opportunity.

Analysis framework

J.P. Morgan first compares 2Q26 results and 3Q guidance with consensus and client expectations, then analyzes segment-level growth drivers in Data Center, Client, Gaming and Embedded. It links CPU supply, AI accelerator shipment timing, customer demand, capital spending and product mix to revenue, market-share and margin outcomes, before translating its revised earnings outlook into a peer-multiple P/E valuation.

The report separates revenue drivers across server CPUs, Data Center GPUs and other segments, and explains how supply availability, shipment ramps and MI450 mix affect growth and gross margin.

Asset mapping & comparison

Structured mapping from thesis to named assets (strengths, weaknesses, peers, risks).

  • Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
Primary covered company; its Data Center CPU and GPU ramps are the core drivers of the report’s revised earnings outlook.
    Strengths
Data Center revenue more than doubled year on year in 2Q26; EPYC and Instinct demand is accelerating, and MI450 customer pull is ahead of initial forecasts.
    Weaknesses
High-growth Data Center GPU mix is dilutive to gross margin; Client demand faces softness and Gaming is expected to remain depressed.
    Comparison
AMD server revenue grew about 16-17% quarter on quarter in 2Q versus Intel’s roughly 29%, which J.P. Morgan attributes to Intel’s one-time Granite Rapids supply wave.
    Risks
Rack-scale execution risk, potential market-share changes, weaker PC demand and warrant-related dilution beginning in 2H27.
  • Intel (INTC)
    Competitor in server CPUs.
    Strengths
Its approximately 29% quarter-on-quarter server growth in 2Q benefited from a wave of Granite Rapids supply and higher average selling prices.
    Comparison
J.P. Morgan contrasts Intel’s 2Q sequential server growth with AMD’s 16-17% growth but views Intel’s supply effect as one-time.
  • NVIDIA (NVDA)
Competitor in graphics and AI accelerators.
    Comparison
AMD competes with NVIDIA in graphics markets.
    Risks
Material AMD share gains or losses versus competitors could change AMD revenue and EPS estimates.

Impact & implications

The report sees the CPU and AI accelerator ramps lifting AMD’s medium-term earnings potential, especially in CY27, but expects MI450 mix to pressure gross margin during the initial scale-up. The stronger outlook supports a higher target price, while limited apparent upside and execution uncertainty underpin the maintained Neutral rating.

Risks

  • AMD’s first rack-scale AI deployment could face meaningful execution risk as MI450 volumes ramp through FY27.
  • A weaker-than-expected PC market could reduce microprocessor and GPU shipments and lead to lower revenue and EPS estimates.
  • Material market-share gains or losses against Intel and NVIDIA could change AMD’s revenue and EPS outlook.
  • MI450 product mix may dilute gross margin more meaningfully from 4Q26 into 1H27.
  • OpenAI and Meta warrant-related dilution is expected to begin layering into the model in 2H27.

What to watch

  • The timing and scale of Helios/MI450 shipments beginning at the end of 3Q26 and ramping through 1H27.
  • Data Center server CPU growth as additional supply comes online through 4Q26 and CY27.
  • Gross-margin effects from the mix shift toward MI450 systems.
  • Embedded growth from x86 design wins and broad end-market demand.
  • Client-market softness, memory and component pass-through, and the trajectory of Gaming revenue.
  • Progress in expanding AI accelerator customers beyond OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic.
