Report Interpretation
Overview
HSBC Qianhai initiates coverage of Robotechnik, arguing that its 2025 acquisition of ficonTEC transforms it from a solar-cell automation supplier into a key provider of photonic assembly, coupling and testing equipment. The central thesis is that demand from AI-driven optical interconnect and co-packaged optics should produce a material growth and margin inflection from 2027.
Core views
The report’s core thesis is that Robotechnik’s acquisition of German photonics-equipment specialist ficonTEC for RMB1bn in May 2025 changes the company’s growth profile. Its legacy solar-cell business is slowing, while ficonTEC supplies automated equipment for high-precision assembly, fiber coupling and testing of optical components used in AI, telecom/datacom, automotive LiDAR, consumer electronics, 3D sensing and medical devices. HSBC Qianhai expects photonics to account for about 90% of revenue by 2028e, versus 46% in 2025, as the higher-margin business scales. The report links this opportunity to the difficulty of scaling advanced photonic packaging. Fiber-to-chip coupling, active alignment and optical testing require sub-micron or nanometre-level positioning, real-time feedback and high yield at high throughput. Fiber-coupling machines can represent up to 40% of a production line’s value and testers about 27%. ficonTEC’s combination of optical alignment, fiber handling, motion control, automation integration and process know-how is presented as difficult to replicate; it has more than 20 years of experience and an installed base of over 1,000 machines. Robotechnik is expected to add capital, manufacturing capacity and supply-chain leverage to help ficonTEC scale more quickly and at more competitive cost. Order activity is offered as early evidence of commercial traction. Robotechnik announced RMB1.7bn of optoelectronic orders year-to-date in 2026, compared with RMB358m in 2025, including coupling-machine and optical-testing contracts. At end-June 2026, optoelectronic backlog was RMB2.452bn, or 72% of total backlog, while legacy solar-cell orders were RMB934m. HSBC Qianhai believes the order mix provides visibility for 2027 revenue and supports its view that 2027 will be an earnings inflection point, ahead of anticipated broader photonics mass production from 2028. The report highlights photonic testing as a second growth avenue. Robotechnik’s insertion-2 and insertion-3 equipment was already in mass production and shipped to customers as of 21 July 2026, while insertion-4 equipment remained under development. Insertion 2 requires simultaneous electro-optical probing on both sides after PIC/EIC integration; insertion 3 tests optical engines after fiber attachment and requires fast active alignment under changing die-level coupling conditions. HSBC Qianhai argues that ficonTEC’s multi-axis optical-alignment capabilities create a strong position in these yield-critical stages. The report also notes competition from established automated-test-equipment providers and their photonics partnerships, but considers Robotechnik’s specialization differentiated. For market sizing, HSBC Qianhai assumes that advanced photonics begins mass production from 2028. Its 2030 bull case estimates RMB30bn of assembly-equipment TAM and RMB51bn of test-equipment TAM, with Robotechnik implied revenue of RMB8bn at 10% market share. In the bear case, if co-packaging fails to scale in 2030, implied revenue falls to RMB4.8bn. This commercialization assumption is therefore the largest medium-term sensitivity in the report. Financially, HSBC Qianhai forecasts revenue rising from RMB950m in 2025 to RMB1.244bn in 2026e, RMB2.298bn in 2027e and RMB4.054bn in 2028e. It expects optoelectronic assembly and test equipment revenue to grow 60% in 2026e, 150% in 2027e and 100% in 2028e, while solar-cell automation revenue remains broadly flat at RMB541m through the forecast period. Gross margin is forecast to rise from 34.5% in 2025 to 49.7% in 2028e, driven by a richer optoelectronic mix and scale. Net profit is forecast to move from a RMB66m loss in 2025 to RMB45m in 2026e, RMB276m in 2027e and RMB825m in 2028e; HSBC Qianhai forecasts 518% year-on-year profit growth in 2027. The valuation uses PEG because the report considers historical solar-business PE an unsuitable reference for the emerging photonics opportunity. Applying a 0.7x peer-average PEG to Robotechnik’s forecast 330% 2026-28e net-profit CAGR implies a 231x PE; applied to average 2027-28e EPS of RMB3.29, this yields the RMB758.00 target price and about 37% upside. A sum-of-the-parts cross-check values the shares at RMB613, still implying 18% upside. The report notes that Robotechnik traded at 0.6x 2027e PEG, 30% below the 0.9x global-peer average, despite the share-price rebound.
Analysis framework
HSBC Qianhai first assesses the strategic shift created by the ficonTEC acquisition and explains the technical manufacturing bottlenecks in photonic assembly and testing. It then uses announced orders and backlog to assess demand visibility, models segment revenue, margins and earnings through 2028e, develops 2030 bull and bear market scenarios, and values the company primarily on PEG with a sum-of-the-parts cross-check.
Methodology notes
Assessment of ficonTEC’s integrated active-alignment, fiber-handling, testing and automation capabilities.
The report treats specialized know-how, high precision and an installed base as barriers that make the company’s equipment harder to replicate in high-volume photonics manufacturing.
Photonic assembly and testing equipment market sizing under 2030 bull and bear cases.
The report estimates equipment demand from assumed transceiver and CPO volumes, equipment throughput, utilization, yield, selling prices and a 10% Robotechnik market-share assumption.
PEG-based target-price valuation.
The report applies a peer-derived PEG multiple to Robotechnik’s forecast earnings CAGR and average 2027-28e EPS to derive its target price.
Sum-of-the-parts valuation cross-check.
The report separately values the optoelectronic and solar-equipment businesses using earnings multiples and assumptions for 2028 margins.

Impact & implications
The report argues that commercialization of advanced photonic packaging would move Robotechnik toward a higher-growth, higher-margin revenue mix and improve earnings visibility through order conversion. It identifies 2027 as the expected earnings inflection point and 2028 as the expected broader mass-production phase.
Risks
- Alternative optical-coupling and assembly technologies, including high-throughput micro-optical fabrication, could reduce demand for the company’s solutions.
- A macroeconomic slowdown or lower AI data-centre capital expenditure could weaken equipment demand from overseas customers.
- China-US geopolitical tensions could limit market access or disrupt revenue growth.
- Advanced photonic packaging may commercialize and reach mass production more slowly than expected, reducing 2028 revenue and profit and potentially causing a valuation de-rating.
- Faster-than-expected price competition in assembly and testing equipment could compress gross margin.
What to watch
- Further large optoelectronic order wins and conversion of the RMB2.452bn optoelectronic backlog.
- 3Q26 results relative to expectations.
- Progress in CPO and advanced-photonics scale-up toward the expected 2027-28 inflection point.
- Commercial progress of insertion-2 and insertion-3 testing equipment and development of insertion-4 equipment.
- AI data-centre capital-expenditure trends and changes in competitive pricing.
