Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (06869): UBS sees YOFC-H's oversupply fears as excessive and AI-driven high-end fiber demand as underpriced
UBS reiterates Buy on Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable's H shares and raises its target price to HK$330 from HK$290. It expects AI data-center demand and bottlenecks in preform capacity to keep high-end fiber supply tight through 2027-28E.
Summary
UBS reiterates Buy on Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable's H shares and raises its target price to HK$330 from HK$290. It expects AI data-center demand and bottlenecks in preform capacity to keep high-end fiber supply tight through 2027-28E.
- UBS raises 2026-28E earnings forecasts by 116-158%.
- High-end fiber supply is expected to remain tight through at least 2027-28E despite announced capacity additions.
- YOFC-H trades at 8-9x 2027E P/E, versus 12-36x for Chinese and global peers.
- The HK$330 target uses 16x 2027E P/E, reduced from 30x as UBS assumes longer-term price normalization.
Report Interpretation
Overview
UBS argues that the market has overreacted to prospective optical-fiber capacity additions and underestimated Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable's ability to benefit from AI-led global data-center investment. The report reiterates Buy on YOFC-H, raises earnings forecasts sharply and lifts the H-share target price to HK$330.
Core views
UBS says YOFC-H has fallen 37% from its June peak because investors fear that peer and new-entrant capacity announcements will create another oversupply cycle and cause earnings to peak in 2027E. UBS disagrees, arguing that the demand base is changing from China telecom procurement budgets toward global AI infrastructure and data-center build-outs. This should make demand more consumption-oriented, broaden YOFC's customer base to Chinese and global cloud service providers, and support a healthier pricing environment as Chinese telecom operators shift capital expenditure toward higher-return computing networks and AI infrastructure. The report expects upstream preform supply and demand to remain tight through 2027-28E, particularly for high-specification data-center fiber. It argues that greenfield expansion by established manufacturers will take two to three years because of equipment lead times, while new entrants could require more than three years and may achieve smaller effective capacity than planned because of know-how, equipment and customer-verification hurdles. High-end AI fiber has greater production barriers than the G.652.D fiber associated with the prior oversupply cycle, and UBS expects end customers to favor established suppliers. It also expects AI data-center demand to more than offset slower telecom growth and a potential tapering of fiber-attached-drone demand from 2027E. UBS considers YOFC particularly well positioned because it is a top-two global preform supplier and, according to its channel checks and the company's H1 2026 report, is among the few global companies with all three preform processes: PCVD, VAD and OVD. The firm says YOFC's largely in-house proprietary equipment supports product quality and faster commercialization of high-end and AI-oriented fiber. It highlights mass production of polarization-maintaining fiber, commercial-scale hollow-core fiber, substantial preform capacity, and a full value chain from preform to downstream connectivity products. UBS expects these capabilities and established cloud-service-provider relationships to support global data-center penetration, higher-value product expansion, market-share gains, pricing and margins. Reflecting stronger-than-expected AI-driven fiber pricing and a mix shift toward higher-performance products, UBS raises 2026-28E earnings forecasts by 116-158%. Its updated net-earnings estimates are Rmb9.1bn, Rmb15.6bn and Rmb19.1bn for 2026E, 2027E and 2028E, respectively; the detailed estimates are Rmb9,075m, Rmb15,615m and Rmb19,137m. UBS assumes more than 50% of total 4,500-ton capacity is allocated to G.657.A1/A2 products, whose prices are assumed above Rmb130-150/fkm, about twice G.652.D pricing, while unit production costs remain broadly stable at Rmb15-20/fkm. On a Rmb150/fkm blended fiber price and 4,500 tons of capacity, it calculates 2027E net profit of Rmb15-16bn. For 2028E, it assumes a further 10% production allocation shift from telecom to data-center products and more than 20% growth. UBS expects gross margin above 70% and estimates its 2027E and 2028E earnings forecasts at 7% and 19% above consensus. Although earnings estimates rise, UBS lowers the YOFC-H target multiple to 16x 2027E P/E from 30x to reflect its expectation that pricing gradually normalizes over the longer term. The 16x multiple is supported by a projected 16% 2027-30E earnings CAGR. The resulting H-share target price is HK$330, 14% above the prior HK$290 target. UBS notes YOFC-H trades at 8.6x 2027E P/E on its estimates, at a 57% discount to the A share, and below Chinese and global peer ranges of 12-36x. It argues that offshore investors still treat the H share as a cyclical stock and underappreciate the durability of the AI upcycle, YOFC's global data-center opportunity and downstream connectivity expansion; UBS expects a re-rating and a narrower H-A discount if fiber prices stay elevated for longer. UBS maintains Neutral on YOFC-A, with a Rmb510 target based on 27x 2027E P/E, reduced from 35x. Its H-share base case uses 45% optical-transmission revenue growth, 85% optical-transmission gross margin, 72.5% blended gross margin, 57.8% operating margin and 16x target P/E; the report's upside and downside cases indicate HK$500 and HK$100, respectively.
Analysis framework
UBS assesses the supply-demand outlook for optical fiber, focusing on AI data-center demand, preform bottlenecks, production technology and capacity lead times. It translates assumptions on capacity allocation, fiber prices and unit costs into earnings estimates, then values YOFC-H and YOFC-A using target P/E multiples while comparing YOFC-H's valuation with A shares and domestic and global peers.
Methodology notes
High-end optical-fiber supply-demand analysis
UBS weighs AI-led data-center demand against preform, equipment and customer-verification constraints to assess whether capacity additions will create oversupply.
Preform-to-fiber-to-connectivity value-chain analysis
The report links upstream preform technology and capacity to high-end fiber availability, pricing and downstream connectivity-product margins.
Target P/E valuation
UBS values YOFC-H at 16x 2027E P/E and YOFC-A at 27x 2027E P/E, with the H-share multiple informed by a 16% 2027-30E earnings CAGR.
Capacity, production mix, fiber-price and unit-cost sensitivity
UBS uses production capacity, allocation to high-end products, fiber pricing and stable unit-cost assumptions to derive earnings outcomes.

Impact & implications
UBS believes durable tightness in high-end fiber and YOFC's preform technology, capacity and cloud-customer relationships can sustain elevated pricing, margins and earnings beyond the market's assumed 2027E peak. It expects this to support a re-rating of YOFC-H and a narrowing of its H-A valuation discount.
