Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (06869): UBS reiterates Buy on YOFC-H as it sees AI-led high-end fiber demand keeping supply tight beyond 2027.
UBS argues that concern over new optical-fiber capacity is excessive because equipment, know-how and customer-verification constraints delay effective supply. It raises 2026-28E earnings by 116-158% and lifts its YOFC-H target price to HK$330.
Summary
UBS argues that concern over new optical-fiber capacity is excessive because equipment, know-how and customer-verification constraints delay effective supply. It raises 2026-28E earnings by 116-158% and lifts its YOFC-H target price to HK$330.
- UBS expects tight high-end fiber supply-demand conditions through 2027-28E.
- 2026-28E earnings forecasts rise 116-158% to Rmb9.1bn, Rmb15.6bn and Rmb19.1bn.
- YOFC-H target price rises to HK$330 from HK$290 despite a lower target P/E multiple of 16x versus 30x.
- UBS views YOFC-H's 8-9x 2027E P/E as well below Chinese and global peers' 12-36x range.
Report Interpretation
Overview
UBS reviews Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable's AI-driven opportunity and concludes that the market is overestimating the risk that new capacity will end the fiber upcycle after 2027. The report reiterates Buy on YOFC-H and raises the target price to HK$330.
Core views
UBS argues that the optical-fiber market is changing from one driven mainly by Chinese telecom procurement budgets and multi-year capex cycles to one increasingly supported by global AI infrastructure and data-center build-outs. In its view, this makes demand more consumption-oriented, broadens YOFC's customer base toward Chinese and global cloud service providers, and supports a healthier pricing environment. Chinese telecom operators are also reallocating capex toward higher-return computing networks and AI infrastructure, which UBS believes may reduce the industry's historical emphasis on cost minimization. The report's central rebuttal to oversupply concerns is that announced capacity will not translate quickly into effective high-end supply. UBS expects greenfield expansion by established manufacturers to take two to three years, and more than three years for new entrants, because of bottlenecks in critical equipment, technical know-how and customer verification. High-specification data-center fiber also has higher production barriers than the G.652.D products that dominated the prior oversupply cycle. UBS expects AI customers to favor established suppliers, while upstream preform supply remains constrained; it therefore expects tight supply-demand conditions in high-end fiber through 2027-28E and fiber prices to continue rising through 2027E, albeit more slowly. UBS sees YOFC as particularly well placed because it is one of the global top-two preform suppliers and, according to its channel checks, one of few companies worldwide with PCVD, VAD and OVD preform processes plus largely in-house proprietary equipment. It cites YOFC's mass-produced polarization-maintaining fiber, commercial-scale hollow-core fiber, full value-chain coverage from preform through connectivity products, and established CSP relationships. These capabilities are expected to support product quality, faster commercialization, global data-center penetration, downstream expansion and market-share gains as fiber density rises. Reflecting stronger-than-expected AI-driven fiber pricing and a higher mix of performance fiber, UBS raises 2026-28E net-earnings forecasts by 116-158% to Rmb9.1bn, Rmb15.6bn and Rmb19.1bn. It assumes more than 50% of YOFC's 4,500-ton capacity will be allocated to G.657.A1/A2 fiber, priced above Rmb130-150/fkm—about twice G.652.D—while unit production cost stays broadly stable at Rmb15-20/fkm. On a Rmb150/fkm mixed fiber price, UBS calculates 2027E net profit of Rmb15-16bn; for 2028E it assumes another 10% allocation shift from telecom to data-center products and more than 20% growth. Its 2027E and 2028E earnings estimates are 7% and 19% above consensus, respectively. The valuation argument combines higher earnings with a more conservative multiple. UBS lowers its YOFC-H target multiple to 16x 2027E P/E from 30x because it expects pricing eventually to normalize, while basing that multiple on a 16% 2027-30E earnings CAGR. The higher earnings forecast nevertheless lifts the target price 14% to HK$330 from HK$290. UBS notes that YOFC-H trades at 8-9x 2027E P/E, including 8.6x on its estimates, versus 12-36x for Chinese and global peers, and at a 57% discount to the A share. It attributes the discount to offshore investors treating YOFC as cyclical and underestimating both the durability of the AI upcycle and its role in the global AI supply chain. UBS expects the H-A discount to narrow if fiber pricing stays elevated longer.
Analysis framework
UBS tests the investment case through three questions: whether data-center demand can sustain elevated fiber prices, whether announced capacity creates a new oversupply cycle, and whether YOFC can capture AI-related opportunities. It combines supply-demand analysis, channel checks on production technology and capacity lead times, product-mix and cost assumptions, peer valuation comparisons, earnings sensitivities, and target P/E valuation.
Methodology notes
High-end optical-fiber supply-demand analysis
UBS assesses AI data-center demand against preform, equipment, know-how and verification constraints to judge how long high-end fiber supply may remain tight.
Production mix, fiber pricing and unit-cost earnings build
The report links allocation toward higher-priced G.657.A1/A2 products, fiber prices and stable unit costs to YOFC's projected profits and margins.
Target P/E valuation
UBS applies a 16x 2027E P/E multiple to YOFC-H, reduced from 30x to reflect eventual pricing normalization despite stronger earnings.
