Report Interpretation
Overview
This data-tracking report reviews Japan’s July 2026 METI production statistics for electronic components and semiconductors. JPMorgan’s central view is that conditions remain solid but uneven: substrates, Si-MOSFETs and memory are strong, while MLCC value data and several discrete-semiconductor categories remain softer.
Core views
METI released July 2026 production statistics on 14 September. JPMorgan characterizes aggregate domestic electronic-components production value in US-dollar terms as solid but slightly below normal seasonal patterns. The category split was uneven: passive components declined 9% YoY but rose 4% MoM, mechanical components fell 2% YoY and 1% MoM, electronic substrates gained 19% YoY and 6% MoM, and electronic circuit mounting boards rose 9% YoY and 1% MoM. The report therefore sees a resilient overall backdrop, with growth concentrated in substrates and circuit-board-related products rather than broad-based across all component lines. For passive components, MLCC production volume continued to recover, but US-dollar production value was approximately in line with seasonality and the trend remained flat. JPMorgan notes a meaningful divergence from Ministry of Finance trade statistics, which show MLCC export values continuing to trend upward. It places greater emphasis on the trade data and says the weak-looking METI value trend is not yet a reason for excessive concern. Aluminum electrolytic capacitor production value remained on a gradual recovery path; resistors and crystal devices also showed gradual recovery, while inductors were broadly unchanged. Connector production value was below seasonality but appeared to be improving gradually. Electronic substrates were the clearest component strength. US-dollar production value for electronic substrates increased 19% YoY and 6% MoM, while rigid module boards increased 52.4% YoY and 6.7% MoM. The report specifically highlights continuing strong growth in rigid module substrates, including ABF substrates and FC-BGA, and views this as positive for Ibiden. It retains Ibiden, TDK, Rohm, and one MLCC company—either Murata Manufacturing or Taiyo Yuden—as its four sector top picks. Semiconductor results varied markedly by product category. US-dollar production value for discrete semiconductors declined 15% YoY and 1% MoM; diodes and rectifiers fell 29% YoY and 2% MoM, silicon transistors declined 42% YoY and 11% MoM, and IGBTs fell 16% YoY and 5% MoM. In contrast, Si-MOSFET production value rose 10% YoY and 20% MoM. JPMorgan says Si-MOSFET production has been rising gradually despite month-to-month volatility. Logic IC production value increased 3% YoY and 4% MoM, above seasonal trends, whereas MCU value fell 27% YoY and 1% MoM and was slightly below seasonality. Memory was the standout semiconductor category. US-dollar production value reached US$1,438.3 million, up 408% YoY and 16% MoM. The average memory unit price increased 404% YoY and 2% MoM. JPMorgan emphasizes that both production value and pricing continue to post very high year-on-year growth, distinguishing memory from the mixed performance among discrete devices and MCUs.
Analysis framework
JPMorgan compares July METI domestic production volumes and values with year-on-year, month-on-month and seasonal patterns, then contrasts MLCC production data with Ministry of Finance export data. It evaluates component and semiconductor categories separately to identify where production momentum is broad, recovering, flat or weakening.
Methodology notes
Comparison of production volume, production value and average unit price across component and semiconductor categories.
The report separates output volumes from US-dollar production values and, for memory, average unit prices. This helps distinguish volume recovery from pricing-driven growth and explains why MLCC volume can recover while production value remains flat.
Seasonality comparison and cross-checking of domestic production statistics against export data.
JPMorgan assesses whether July results are above or below normal seasonal patterns and uses Ministry of Finance trade data to contextualize the apparent weakness in METI MLCC production-value data.

Impact & implications
JPMorgan interprets the data as supportive for the electronic-components sector overall, with substrate strength particularly positive for Ibiden and persistent memory and Si-MOSFET momentum offsetting weak diodes, silicon transistors, IGBTs and MCUs. The report considers the MLCC production-value weakness less concerning because exports continue to rise.
