Report Interpretation
Overview
This company report reassesses China Resources Beer after its H1 2026 results. Bernstein argues that the investment case has weakened because anticipated brewery-network rationalisation is no longer likely, while aluminium-driven packaging costs and a deteriorating Baijiu business pressure margins and earnings.
Core views
Bernstein downgraded China Resources Beer (CRBeer) to Market-Perform from Outperform and cut its price target to HK$24.00 from HK$47.50. The principal change is the reduced probability of brewery closures, which had been central to the earlier thesis. CRBeer added 20mhl of large-scale brewing capacity in 2024-25 despite declining production volumes. Following two site closures in H1 2025, Bernstein had expected a further 8-10 closures in 2026-27 to generate 120-150bps of beer-margin expansion after cost headwinds. However, no further closures were announced in H1 2026, management described the brewing grid as in a relatively steady state, and its strategic messaging shifted away from cost efficiency toward navigating change and innovation. Bernstein therefore assumes zero closures over the next 18 months and sees little likelihood of closure-led margin expansion over the coming 24 months. Cost inflation compounds the loss of restructuring benefits. CRBeer recorded about 110bps of beer gross-margin contraction in H1 2026, mainly from the hedged effect of last year's increase in aluminium costs. Based on the three-month hedged Shanghai Changjiang aluminium spot price, Bernstein estimates aluminium headwinds at about 11% year on year in H1 and expects them to rise to 16% in H2, before moderating to low-single digits in Q1 2027 at prevailing commodity prices. The company has also become more exposed to aluminium because cans are estimated to have risen from about 20% of pack mix in 2019 to about 45% currently, reflecting stronger off-trade demand and expansion in instant retail. Bernstein forecasts beer revenue growth of 3% in H2 2026 and FY2027, but EBITDA-margin contraction of 150bps and 120bps, respectively. The Baijiu business is the second major drag. Baijiu revenue fell 27% in H1 despite an easy comparison, and the division lost RMB166m. Bernstein attributes the weakness to relatively low-priced, undifferentiated offerings, excessive low-end channel inventories and no visible demand recovery. It expects Baijiu revenue to fall 20% in H2 2026 before growing 5% in FY2027, while margins contract 620bps and 350bps, respectively, as lower revenue causes operating deleverage. With RMB4.5bn of Baijiu acquisition-related goodwill still on the balance sheet after last year's RMB2.8bn write-down, the report sees a rising probability of another impairment at the February 2027 full-year results if double-digit revenue declines persist. These changes drive substantial forecast reductions. Bernstein cut beer adjusted EBITDA estimates by 9% and 20% for FY2026-27, reflecting the H1 miss, aluminium pressure and the removal of expected closures. It cut Baijiu adjusted EBITDA by 48% and 76%, respectively. Overall adjusted EBITDA estimates fall 9% and 20%, EPS estimates fall 18% and 23%, and projected revenue growth is 2% in both H2 2026 and FY2027; overall margins are expected to decline 160bps and 130bps. The report now forecasts 2026-27 EPS growth of 0% and 2%, down from 12% and 16%, and says its net-income estimates are 2%/6%/9% below Bloomberg consensus over the next three years. For valuation, Bernstein applies a 12.4x NTM+1 P/E multiple to forward NTM+1 EPS of CNY1.70, implying HK$24 per share and an NTM EV/EBITDA multiple of 6.4x on forward NTM+1 EBITDA of CNY9.1bn. The target multiple is reduced from 16.0x and is compared with 11.4x for Tsingtao H-shares, CRBeer's own 12-month average, and a 13% discount to the MSCI China Consumer Staples Index. Bernstein also states that the target is broadly consistent with its DCF, which uses a 13.6% WACC and 1.0% terminal growth rate. The HK$24 target represented 15% upside to the HK$20.82 close on 25 August 2026, but the rating reflects Bernstein's view that the earnings catalysts supporting its former Outperform thesis have diminished.
Analysis framework
Bernstein first revises its operating assumptions for brewery closures, beer volumes and packaging costs, then reassesses Baijiu demand, profitability and impairment risk. It translates these assumptions into segment-level EBITDA, group EPS and consensus comparisons, and finally derives a lower price target using forward P/E cross-checks and a DCF valuation.
Methodology notes
Beer revenue and margin outlook based on volume growth, pack mix, aluminium costs and brewery-network changes.
The report separates limited beer volume growth from cost and capacity effects to explain why revenue can grow modestly while margins contract.
Forward NTM+1 P/E valuation.
Bernstein applies a 12.4x forward earnings multiple to NTM+1 EPS to derive its HK$24 target price, comparing the multiple with peers, history and the sector index.
DCF cross-check using WACC and terminal growth assumptions.
The report discounts forecast free cash flow using a 13.6% WACC and 1.0% terminal growth rate to test whether the P/E-based target is consistent with intrinsic-value assumptions.
Asset mapping & comparison
Structured mapping from thesis to named assets (strengths, weaknesses, peers, risks).
- China Resources Beer Holdings Co Ltd (00291.HK)Primary covered company; earnings and valuation are pressured by the removal of expected brewery closures, aluminium-cost inflation and Baijiu weakness.

- Beer revenue is expected to grow 3% in H2 2026 and FY2027; the stock trades below its historical and benchmark-relative valuation measures.
- Weaknesses
- Low expected beer-volume growth, forecast margin contraction, Baijiu operating losses and lowered EPS estimates.

Impact & implications
Bernstein believes CRBeer's former margin-expansion catalyst has weakened materially. With modest beer growth, higher packaging costs and continuing Baijiu losses, it expects low earnings growth and a lower valuation basis despite the target price remaining above the latest close.
Risks
- Higher-than-expected raw-material inflation could further pressure CRBeer's earnings and price target.
- Competitive reactions to CRBeer's price increases, particularly in low- and mid-end brands, could weaken performance.
- Weakness in the mid-to-low-end Baijiu segment could last longer than Bernstein expects.
- Continued double-digit Baijiu revenue declines could raise the probability of another impairment.
What to watch
- Whether CRBeer resumes brewery closures or other material cost-efficiency measures.
- The pace of beer volume recovery and premiumisation relative to Bernstein's assumptions.
- Aluminium-price pressure and its effect on packaging costs and beer margins.
- Whether Baijiu revenue returns to growth earlier than expected, and the outlook for Baijiu goodwill impairment.
