Report Interpretation

Overview

This NDR follow-up argues that Laopu Gold's weak 2Q was principally a response to falling gold prices rather than a structural deterioration. J.P. Morgan maintains Overweight, expecting sequential earnings recovery, supported by resilient margins, revised inventory and pre-sale practices, and medium-term growth initiatives.

Core views

J.P. Morgan's principal conclusion from Laopu's 2-3 September Hong Kong NDR is that the 2Q slowdown was more cyclical than structural. Two rounds of gold-price declines in April and June, alongside a relatively rigid pricing response, weakened demand; the institution interprets this as gold-price-driven purchase deferral and execution pressure. Retail momentum improved more visibly from mid-August, with several peak Qixi days returning to the prior year's strong levels. All boutiques remained profitable even during the weak quarter, while gold wares were more resilient through the volatility. Margin performance was stronger than expected. Despite more flexible promotions, management indicated overall gross profit margin stayed above 40% from July to date. Management considers roughly 40% a comfortable level that can stimulate demand while retaining healthy profitability, contrasting with the unusually high margin but weak sales observed in 2Q. J.P. Morgan therefore sees sufficient margin buffer for Laopu to exchange some margin for volume without damaging its earnings model. Its gold-price forecast is US$4,500 by end-2026 and US$5,000 by end-2027. The company has formalized a more systematic playbook for gold-price volatility. When prices fall, it intends to keep inventory lean, clear legacy inventory more quickly through promotions and accelerate the shift to new collections. When prices rise and sales surge, it plans to use pre-sales to gauge demand, then use the pre-sale cash to purchase raw materials, locking in raw-material costs while sharing part of commodity-price risk with consumers. J.P. Morgan believes this framework should enable a faster response in future volatile periods. The report identifies boutique optimization, VIC development and overseas rollout as medium-term growth drivers. Larger boutiques are described as capital efficient because inventory, staffing and rent need not rise proportionately, while expanded space improves product display and premium customer experience. Laopu plans one new boutique in 2026 and optimization of 10-12 existing boutiques; six had been optimized by 1H26. It is also building a more systematic VIC platform through mall partnerships, exclusive events, dedicated VIC managers and VIC-exclusive products. Overseas expansion is expected to run at about four stores annually over the medium term: 2-3 new boutiques in 2026, mainly in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, and 5-6 in 2027 including expansion into the US and Europe. Downside support is attributed to expected inventory cash conversion, the liquidity of gold holdings, and management's view that no current financing is needed despite a modest headline cash balance. Laopu reiterated sustained dividend payout of 73%-76% during 2024-1H26. Full compliance with China's social-security payment requirements from inception is expected to limit incremental cost pressure from tighter enforcement. J.P. Morgan forecasts earnings to improve gradually from about Rmb0.6bn in 2Q26 to about Rmb0.8bn in 3Q26 and Rmb1.2bn in 4Q26. It estimates offline same-store sales growth troughed at a 45%-50% year-on-year decline in 2Q and expects the decline to narrow to 15%-20% in 2H26, before becoming flat in 2027. Although it expects 2H26 revenue and earnings to decline about 24% and 21% year-on-year on a demanding base, it forecasts 2027 revenue and earnings growth of 9% and 12%. Its 2H26, 2027 and 2028 earnings estimates are respectively 23%, 7% and 4% below consensus. The HK$891 Dec-2026 target price is based on 18x 2027E P/E, compared with a sector average of about 15x. J.P. Morgan considers the premium justified by Laopu's positioning between traditional gold jewelry and global luxury, with stronger brand equity, pricing power and profitability than conventional jewelry peers. It sees the company as well positioned for experience-led growth through disciplined store expansion, a direct-to-consumer model, differentiated service and a highly selective, trained team. With the shares trading at 8x 2027E P/E, the institution maintains Overweight.

Analysis framework

J.P. Morgan uses management comments from the NDR to assess the causes of the 2Q slowdown, current retail momentum, margin resilience and the company's operating response to gold-price moves. It then connects store, VIC and overseas plans with medium-term growth forecasts, evaluates liquidity and dividends for downside protection, and applies a forward P/E multiple to derive the price target.
