Report Interpretation

Overview

J.P. Morgan reviews Tigermed following discussions with management. It recognizes stronger orders, early pricing recovery and overseas potential, but maintains differentiated A/H-share ratings because the earnings path, AI-cost absorption and valuation support remain uncertain.

Core views

Management remained constructive on order momentum, pricing recovery and AI positioning, reaffirming full-year double-digit revenue growth and non-GAAP net profit guidance above RMB600 million. The reported evidence is a 30% year-on-year increase in new orders during 1H26 and a 31.8% rise in 1H26 non-GAAP profit. J.P. Morgan sees these as support for backlog growth, better revenue visibility and eventual margin recovery, while noting that the guidance depends on keeping 2H26 AI spending within budget. The report distinguishes underlying operations from reported earnings. Although non-GAAP profit improved, reported net profit swung to a RMB413.2 million loss due to fair-value losses in the investment portfolio. J.P. Morgan estimates that roughly RMB9.6 billion of value relates to that portfolio rather than the core CRO business. This can add upside in a risk-on biotechnology market, but it also makes headline earnings volatile and less dependable as an indicator of operating momentum. Overseas business-development investment and multinational-client wins are encouraging for the multi-year story, but management characterized these relationships as early stage, implying limited near-term financial contribution. AI is viewed as a potential efficiency enabler rather than a direct threat to Tigermed’s CRO business, but the report does not consider the economics proven. Management expects around RMB200 million of AI-related spending this year, sharply above roughly RMB50 million last year, and expects cost controls elsewhere to absorb the increase. J.P. Morgan flags this as a real margin headwind whose offset has not been tested over a full budget cycle. The cited 60% to 70% efficiency gains apply to narrow text-based workflows such as medical writing and translation, leaving uncertain how quickly they can translate into consolidated margin improvement; the report also notes possible pricing stickiness and AI-substitution risk in clinical CRO services. The forecast update is modest on sales but materially cautious on FY26 profit. Sales assumptions for FY26-34E rise by 0-3%, with FY26-28E unchanged and FY29E onward raised 1-3%. Recurring net profit for FY26E is revised to RMB590 million from about RMB600 million, while FY27-28E recurring-profit estimates are largely maintained. Separately, the financial-estimate table shows FY26E revenue of RMB7,746 million, adjusted EBITDA of RMB981 million, adjusted net income of RMB210 million and adjusted EPS of RMB0.24; it forecasts revenue growth of 13.4%, followed by 15.4% in FY27E and 18.2% in FY28E, with EBITDA margin recovering from 12.7% in FY26E to 22.8% and 25.1% in FY27E and FY28E. Valuation drives the maintained ratings. The report describes the shares as trading at 37x FY27E P/E, a level requiring near-flawless execution and leaving limited room for disappointment. It keeps Underweight on Tigermed-A because its valuation is less attractive, while retaining Neutral on Tigermed-H because the constructive operational narrative is judged to be reasonably balanced by valuation and earnings-quality concerns. The A-share Dec-27 target rises from RMB42 to RMB44 and the H-share target from HK$41 to HK$44; the target-end date is extended by 12 months to Dec-27. The A-share DCF uses 3.0% terminal growth and 10.7% WACC, while the H-share DCF uses 3.0% terminal growth and 11.3% WACC.

Analysis framework

J.P. Morgan combines management discussion points on orders, pricing, AI and overseas expansion with historical and forecast financial metrics, then evaluates whether those operational developments justify current valuation. It separates recurring operating performance from investment-portfolio fair-value effects and uses DCF valuation to derive separate A- and H-share targets.

Methodology notes

  • Valuation methodsDCF (Discounted Cash Flow)

Discounted cash flow valuation using free cash flow, terminal growth and WACC assumptions.

The report values the A-share at RMB44 using a 3.0% terminal growth rate and 10.7% WACC; the H-share framework uses 3.0% terminal growth and 11.3% WACC, with the resulting value converted to HK$44 per share.

  • Corporate Fundamentals and FinanceEarnings Quality Analysis

Comparison of recurring/non-GAAP operating earnings with reported profit affected by investment-portfolio valuation.

J.P. Morgan treats the RMB413.2 million reported loss from fair-value losses as distinct from improving non-GAAP profit, arguing that portfolio-driven volatility makes headline earnings a less reliable measure of core CRO momentum.

  • Industry AnalysisVolume-price decomposition

Assessment of order growth and pricing recovery as separate drivers of CRO revenue and margins.

The report uses 30% 1H26 new-order growth and early pricing improvement to support the revenue outlook, while testing whether AI spending and cost controls permit margin recovery.

Asset mapping & comparison

Structured mapping from thesis to named assets (strengths, weaknesses, peers, risks).

  • Tigermed-A (300347.SZ)
Primary covered A-share listing; J.P. Morgan retains an Underweight rating.
    Strengths
Stronger order momentum, backlog growth, early pricing recovery and intact structural sector drivers.
    Weaknesses
Valuation is considered less attractive; AI spending pressures margins and reported earnings are volatile.
    Comparison
The report views A-shares as less attractive on valuation than H-shares.
    Risks
Better-than-expected overseas growth, stronger fair-value gains or investment income, and a further expansion of the A/H-share premium.
  • Tigermed-H (03347.HK)
Primary covered H-share listing; J.P. Morgan retains a Neutral rating.
    Strengths
A more balanced risk-reward profile from improving orders, pricing and revenue visibility.
    Weaknesses
Valuation and earnings-quality concerns offset the constructive operational narrative.
    Comparison
The report considers H-shares more balanced than A-shares but not sufficiently compelling for a positive rating.
    Risks
Lower-than-expected growth and R&D risks in the pipeline.

Key data

  • 1H26 non-GAAP profit growth31.8% YoYContrasts with a reported net loss driven by portfolio fair-value losses.
  • Reported net profitRMB413.2 million lossAttributed to fair-value losses from the investment portfolio.
  • AI-related spendingApproximately RMB200 million this yearUp from approximately RMB50 million last year and identified as a cost headwind.
  • FY26E adjusted net incomeRMB210 millionThe table shows a 61.4% reduction from the prior RMB544 million estimate.
  • FY27E P/E37xThe report considers this valuation demanding given execution and earnings-quality uncertainty.
  • Price targetsRMB44.00 for A-shares; HK$44.00 for H-sharesBoth targets are extended to Dec-27; prior targets were RMB42.00 and HK$41.00, respectively.

Impact & implications

The report considers improved orders, pricing and eventual margin recovery supportive for Tigermed’s business outlook, particularly for H-shares, but believes the A-share valuation remains unattractive. Portfolio volatility, the scale-up of AI spending and the early stage of overseas expansion prevent the more constructive operating view from translating into a rating upgrade.

Risks

  • For A-shares, upside risks are better-than-expected overseas business growth, continued outperformance in fair-value gains and investment income, and further growth in the A/H-share premium.
  • For H-shares, key downside risks are lower-than-expected growth and R&D risks in the pipeline.
