Report Interpretation
Overview
This weekly North American semiconductor report previews Broadcom and Ambarella earnings, reviews Skyworks' Technology Day and updates sector valuation, inventory and positioning indicators. Its central conclusion is that AI spending remains the dominant positive driver, although high expectations and company-specific execution risks create materially different risk-reward profiles.
Core views
Morgan Stanley expects strong AI spending to remain the central theme through the week's off-cycle semiconductor earnings. The institution maintains an Attractive view on North American semiconductors, with Broadcom and Ambarella positioned for solid results and outlooks. The report is also incrementally more positive on Skyworks' long-term opportunity following its Technology Day, although it retains an Equal-weight rating because near-term pressures remain. For Broadcom, which was scheduled to report after the market close on September 2, the report expects strength in both custom ASICs and AI networking. July-quarter AI revenue is modeled at $16.0bn, up 48% sequentially, comprising $10.8bn of custom ASIC revenue and $5.2bn of AI-networking revenue. October-quarter AI revenue is forecast to rise another 32% sequentially to $21.2bn, including $14.9bn from custom ASICs and $6.2bn from AI networking. Morgan Stanley sees room for upside because TPU demand remains strong and networking continues to benefit from the broader AI-infrastructure buildout. Broadcom's total July-quarter revenue is modeled at $29.4bn, up 32.5% sequentially and 84.3% year on year, versus the Street's $29.2bn. Semiconductor Solutions revenue is estimated at $20.5bn, up 36.6% sequentially and 123.6% year on year, while Infrastructure Software is estimated at $8.9bn, up 24.1% and 31.3%, respectively. Morgan Stanley's 74.0% gross-margin estimate is slightly above the Street's 73.5%, and its $3.24 EPS estimate is slightly ahead of $3.22. For October, it models $34.8bn of revenue, up 18.5% sequentially and 93.4% year on year, versus $34.7bn consensus. Semiconductor Solutions is forecast at $25.9bn, up 26.5% sequentially and 134.3% year on year, while Infrastructure Software remains at $8.9bn, flat sequentially but up 28.3% year on year. Gross margin is modeled at 72.9% and EPS at $3.85, compared with Street EPS of $3.84. The larger Broadcom issue is the 2027 AI trajectory. Morgan Stanley sees potential upside to its roughly $120bn AI-revenue estimate, while Broadcom previously guided to revenue well above $100bn and indicated that growth could continue well into 2028. However, some market expectations assume more than $150bn of AI revenue next year. Morgan Stanley considers that possible but not certain, so the main near-term risk is the expectations bar rather than the underlying business. The report also cautions against overinterpreting reports of lower CoWoS forecasts because supply-chain checks can be noisy. Supplier diversification around Google's TPU program is acknowledged, but Morgan Stanley does not equate diversification with displacement. MediaTek participation is considered credible, while reported AMD involvement in TPU v10 and Marvell's warrant agreement with Google show that the supplier ecosystem is broadening. Even so, Morgan Stanley expects Broadcom to retain roughly 80% of its longer-term TPU opportunity because of its strong incumbent position. Updates on newer custom programs will matter increasingly through 2027. Broadcom remains one of the institution's preferred AI-compute names and ranks closely behind NVIDIA, its Top Pick, supported by custom-ASIC leadership, networking strength, growing customer diversification and confidence in management execution. Broadcom is rated Overweight with a $502 base-case target, compared with a reported price of $368.79 and 36% indicated base-case upside. The base case applies 28 times CY2027e ModelWare EPS of $17.92; Morgan Stanley notes that this is roughly 26 times non-GAAP EPS of $19.59 and broadly in line with or below AI peers. The $637 bull case uses 31 times bull-case EPS of $20.55 and assumes stronger AI revenue, new xPU ramps, sustained networking strength and VMware synergies. The $308 bear case uses 20 times bear-case EPS of $15.40 and reflects weaker revenue, disappointing synergies and customer programs that fail to reach production. Additional upside drivers include a recovery in core semiconductors and successful VMware integration, while downside risks include networking share loss to NVIDIA, uncompetitive ASICs and poor VMware execution. For Ambarella, scheduled to report after the market close on September 3, Morgan Stanley expects another solid quarter led by automotive and healthy edge-AI demand. July-quarter revenue is modeled at $108.3mn, up 7.9% sequentially and 13.3% year on year, above the Street's $107.8mn. IP Security is expected to rise 9.7% sequentially and 14.5% year on year, while automotive revenue is modeled up 4.0% and 21.3%, respectively. Gross margin is estimated at 59.8%, in line with consensus, and EPS at $0.16 versus the Street's $0.17. October revenue is forecast at $121.2mn, up 12.0% sequentially and 11.8% year on year, above consensus of $119.3mn. IP Security is modeled up 15.3% sequentially and 12.3% year on year, automotive up 3.0% and 19.5%, gross margin at 59.7% versus 59.6%, and EPS at $0.29 versus $0.30. Automotive should be Ambarella's stronger growth driver this year, with revenue increasing approximately 20% as fleet telematics, AI video, safety applications and AI content per vehicle expand. IoT is more mixed: enterprise security remains relatively healthy, but consumer-oriented markets could weaken in the second half as higher memory and storage costs affect demand. Beyond the next few quarters, Morgan Stanley sees a multiyear edge-AI opportunity. Drones are viewed as a compelling near-term market, while the coming CV7 ramp should support growth and average selling prices. Automotive remains important, although a broader CV3 autonomy ramp has not yet produced a major update and L2+ development is slow. Longer-term opportunities span automotive, drones, robotics and physical-AI infrastructure. The report notes unconfirmed M&A reports involving Ambarella and NXP but says it has no validation that discussions occurred or that a transaction will happen. It nevertheless sees a possible strategic fit: Ambarella could contribute differentiated edge-AI and computer-vision technology, while NXP could contribute scale, automotive relationships and access to OEMs. Morgan Stanley emphasizes that its Overweight thesis is based primarily on Ambarella's underlying technology rather than prospective M&A. The $96 base target represents 36% indicated upside from $70.63 and uses roughly 9 times CY2026e revenue of $410mn. The $136 bull case uses 10 times $537mn, while the $36 bear case uses 3.5 times $352mn. The bear case reflects slower automotive ramps, stalled security-camera growth and computer-vision products failing to expand beyond initial surveillance wins. Skyworks' Technology Day highlighted its portfolio across Mobile and Broad Markets. In Mobile, Skyworks said it now has essentially 100% of Google Pixel RF front-end content after winning the mid-band position in Google's roughly two-year recompete cycle. The agreement extends through 2030 and is expected to generate more than $1bn in cumulative revenue. Skyworks also emphasized its MediaTek relationship and early visibility into next-generation RF requirements. Outside mobile, Skyworks demonstrated how its RF, timing, isolation, sensing and power capabilities could address faster-growing markets. Precision Timing combines network synchronization, jitter attenuation, clock generation and software in one integrated circuit. Data-center opportunities include higher-voltage power architectures, isolation, gate drivers and sensing wherever 800V systems appear from the grid to the rack. The company also discussed automotive, WiFi and broadband, drones and other edge-connectivity applications. Morgan Stanley came away incrementally positive on Skyworks' long-term prospects, but near-term Broad Markets trends remain mixed: data center and automotive are strong, IoT is softer, and smartphones are holding up despite memory headwinds. Broad Markets could eventually become a larger share of revenue and reduce dependence on mobile, which is important given ongoing Apple share loss. The Qorvo transaction and integration are the main catalysts to monitor. Morgan Stanley keeps Skyworks Equal-weight with a $72 base target versus $65.79, implying 9% indicated upside; the report's risk-reward table shows a $43 bear case and $105 bull case. Because of transaction risk and uncertain synergies, the institution prefers a 13.5 times multiple on standalone CY2027 EPS of $5.31 rather than valuing the company on combined EPS of about $7 at roughly 13 times. Sector inventory data remain mixed and generally elevated. Semiconductor-company inventory stands at 114 days, up two days sequentially and 23 days above the historical median. Semiconductor-customer inventory rose nine days to 60 days, compared with a seasonal increase of eight days, and remains above its historical median. Distributor inventory declined two days to 61 days, versus a seasonal increase of four days, but is still seven days above its historical median. Short interest as of August 28 was 1.2% of float for Broadcom, 9.3% for Ambarella and 19.8% for Skyworks, compared with a semiconductor coverage average of 5.5% and median of 5.0%.
Analysis framework
Morgan Stanley begins with the week's principal earnings and event catalysts, builds company revenue and margin forecasts by operating segment, and compares those estimates with consensus. It then connects near-term figures to longer-term demand drivers such as AI infrastructure, TPU programs, edge AI and automotive adoption. Risk-reward scenarios and valuation multiples translate the operating assumptions into price targets, while inventory days, short interest and peer comparisons provide broader sector context.

Impact & implications
The report argues that AI-infrastructure spending remains powerful enough to sustain rapid growth for Broadcom and support multiyear edge-AI opportunities for Ambarella. However, Broadcom's near-term share response may depend on clearing unusually high expectations, while Ambarella still needs its automotive and computer-vision design wins to translate into larger revenue. Skyworks has credible diversification opportunities in data centers, automotive and precision timing, but its mobile exposure, Apple share loss and transaction execution keep the near-term view more restrained. Elevated sector inventories also indicate that the broader semiconductor recovery remains uneven.
Risks
- Broadcom may deliver strong fundamentals without clearing investor expectations that in some cases assume more than $150bn of next-year AI revenue.
- Broadcom could lose networking share to NVIDIA or custom-ASIC customers to competing suppliers, while VMware synergies may underwhelm.
- Supply-chain reports concerning lower CoWoS forecasts could create volatility, although Morgan Stanley considers such checks noisy.
- Ambarella's consumer-oriented IoT markets could weaken in the second half because of higher memory and storage costs.
- Ambarella's automotive ramps, security-camera computer-vision adoption or broader CV penetration could take longer than expected or fail to materialize.
- Skyworks faces softer IoT demand, continued Apple share loss, substantial Apple customer concentration and possible pricing pressure.
- The Qorvo transaction could be canceled or deliver weaker-than-expected integration benefits, and RF competition or China localization could intensify.
- Semiconductor-company, customer and distributor inventories remain above their historical medians.
