Report Interpretation

Overview

This report reviews NIO following its 2Q26 results and conference call. Goldman Sachs cuts estimates and target prices after below-expectation 3Q26 guidance, but maintains Buy because it expects stronger product competitiveness, margin resilience, operating leverage and a 2026 free-cash-flow turnaround.

Core views

Goldman Sachs says NIO’s 2Q26 results were broadly in line, but its 3Q26 vehicle-volume and revenue guidance disappointed. At the midpoint, volume guidance was 12% below Goldman Sachs estimates and 11% below consensus, while revenue guidance was 8% below Goldman Sachs estimates and 7% below consensus. The firm attributes the shortfall mainly to weak domestic demand and lower recognition of the Onvo brand. It therefore reduced its earnings estimates and target prices, while retaining Buy because it still expects sequential improvement in volume and operating profit through 3Q26 and 4Q26. The central positive thesis is a 2026 profitability and cash-flow recovery. Goldman Sachs forecasts 2H26E volume and revenue growth of 9% and 22% year on year, respectively, with blended ASP up 13% year on year, reflecting what it views as NIO’s premium-brand strength. It expects gross margin to stabilize at 18%-19% and non-GAAP operating margin to rise to 1.6% in 2H26E from 1.1% in 1H26 as operating leverage improves. For 2026E, it models 44% revenue growth, driven by 29% volume growth and a 14% ASP increase; gross margin improving to 18.6% from 13.6% in 2025; non-GAAP operating profit turning positive at RMB1.8bn versus a RMB11bn loss in 2025; and free cash flow turning positive at RMB7.1bn versus negative RMB3.1bn. Margins remain a key supporting factor. NIO reported gross margin of 18.4% and vehicle margin of 18.5% in 2Q26, compared with 19.0% and 18.8% in 1Q26. Goldman Sachs attributes the resilience to product mix and cost optimization, although higher-margin ES8 and ES9 represented 42% of 2Q26 volume, down from 54% in 1Q26, and higher BOM cost was around RMB14,000. The company expects a further RMB2,000-RMB3,000 BOM-cost increase in 2H26 but aims to keep vehicle margin near the 2Q26 level. Management also guided to non-GAAP R&D spending of about RMB2.5bn per quarter in 2H26 and an SG&A ratio of 10%-11%, down from 13.8% in 2Q26 after most new products launched in the second quarter. The report sees product and brand strategy as important to sustaining sales momentum. NIO intends to upgrade five- and six-series products in 2027, introduce a major strategic Onvo product, and retain a single Firefly model while adding special editions. Goldman Sachs highlights NIO’s focus on pure BEVs, premium-brand positioning and battery swapping. It notes that brand reputation and awareness accounted for more than 30% of NIO users’ purchase decisions, while industry competition is shifting from individual products toward broader system capabilities. NIO’s latest World Model was rolled out to more than 700,000 NIO and Onvo users on 18 June; urban NOP+ mileage rose 93% for NIO users and 128% for Onvo users. The company estimates around 20% ADAS-subscription penetration among used-car users once their five-year complimentary subscriptions expire, at RMB380 per month. Balance-sheet trends also support the turnaround case, according to the report. NIO ended 2Q26 with RMB38bn of net cash, versus RMB32bn in 1Q26 and RMB10bn in 2Q25, aided by sales and improving profitability. Receivable days fell to 46 from 63 in 1Q26 and 61 in 2Q25; payable days were 212, versus 241 and 190; and inventory days were 39, versus 38 and 44. Total debt to equity was 131%, compared with 111% in 1Q26 and 260% in 2Q25, while liabilities to assets were 90%, compared with 89% and 93%. After incorporating the weaker 3Q26 outlook, Goldman Sachs lowered 2026E-28E non-GAAP net-profit estimates to RMB0.6bn-RMB3.6bn from RMB1.6bn-RMB5.3bn. Its 12-month DCF-based target prices fall to US$6.1 for the ADR and HK$48 for the H-share from US$7.0 and HK$55, respectively. The valuation uses an 11.8% WACC, 3.5% terminal growth rate, HK$/US$ of 7.79 and CNY/US$ of 7.15; the revised targets imply 58% ADR upside and 63% H-share upside based on prices as of 3 September 2026.

Analysis framework

Goldman Sachs starts with the gap between NIO’s 3Q26 guidance and its own and consensus expectations, then revises volume, revenue and profit forecasts. It assesses the path to profitability through volume and ASP growth, product mix, vehicle margins, BOM costs, R&D and SG&A leverage, cash-flow trends and the product pipeline. It values the ADR and H-share using a 12-month DCF framework.

Methodology notes

  • Valuation methodsDCF (Discounted Cash Flow)

    12-month discounted cash flow valuation

The report derives target prices by discounting expected future cash flows using an 11.8% WACC and a 3.5% terminal growth rate.

  • Industry AnalysisVolume-price decomposition

Revenue is decomposed into vehicle-volume growth and blended ASP growth.

Goldman Sachs explains its 2026 revenue forecast through 29% volume growth and a 14% ASP increase, linking product mix and premium positioning to revenue and margin outcomes.

Impact & implications

The report argues that weaker near-term demand and Onvo recognition delay the earnings trajectory and warrant lower forecasts and target prices. However, it views NIO’s premium positioning, product pipeline, cost-control measures and expected operating leverage as sufficient to support a positive operating-profit and free-cash-flow transition in 2026.

Risks

  • Sales volumes could fall short of expectations.
  • Price cuts could exceed expectations.
  • Cost inflation could be higher than expected.
