Report Interpretation

Overview

This earnings preview focuses on NVIDIA's near-term B300-led data-center momentum, the initial Vera Rubin rollout, the implications of AI-factory financing arrangements, and revised long-term AI accelerator demand estimates. Citi expects above-consensus July results and October guidance, maintains Buy, and keeps its $300 target price.

Core views

Citi expects NVIDIA's July-quarter results and October-quarter outlook to exceed consensus. It models July-quarter revenue of $93B, about $1B above the Street's $92B, supported by the continuing B300 ramp. For October, Citi forecasts revenue of $105.1B, a 13% sequential increase and above the Street's $103.7B. Its data-center revenue assumptions are +15% sequential growth in July and +14% in October, compared with Street expectations of +13% and +13%. The institution links this view to sustained B300 demand and an initial Vera Rubin ramp, with the faster-than-expected rollout of 1.6T transceivers serving as an early supporting indicator. A central investor concern is NVIDIA's role in financing AI infrastructure. Citi describes the finalized Ohio PORTS-Pike arrangement as credit support for land, power and shell construction for an initial 4.25 IT-GW phase under a 20-year lease, with an option rather than an obligation to extend to a further 3.75 IT-GW, for 8 IT-GW in total. The report argues the risk is smaller than it appears because the firm commitment is limited to the initial phase, the extension can be declined, and the structure includes a quantified $1.5B equity stake rather than an open-ended guarantee. Broader financing platforms announced with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR are intended to mobilize more than $500B of third-party capital; NVIDIA may guarantee only about 25% of individual loans on a case-by-case basis. Citi contrasts these contingent exposures with approximately $50B of free cash flow in one recent quarter and about $80B of cash and marketable securities, while noting that obligations would arise only if borrowers' financing structures fail. It views the arrangements as a way to ease near- to medium-term funding constraints for AI labs and neoclouds and expand AI-factory capacity. Citi revises its GPU unit model using updated CoWoS estimates. It now models 10.6M total units in FY2027, up 50% year on year but below its prior 11.7M forecast. Blackwell units are forecast at 7.7M in FY2027, principally driven by the B300 ramp. Rubin unit assumptions fall from 2.2M to 2.0M because memory supply is expected to constrain deployments more than previously assumed. Nevertheless, Citi raises FY2028 total GPU units by 7%, expecting NVIDIA to sell more memory-dense servers with more servers using lower memory per chip. It forecasts aggregate units to rise 35% in FY2028, with the Rubin family increasing fourfold versus FY2027. Lower unit estimates do not reduce Citi's sales outlook. FY2027 AI GPU sales are raised 3% to $290B, up 82% year on year, because a roughly $9B upward sales revision reflects higher blended ASPs as memory costs increase. Citi estimates NVIDIA can pass through 15%–20% of these higher costs to customers. Its initial FY2028 AI sales estimate assumes 40% year-on-year growth. AI GPUs are expected to account for about 80% of NVIDIA data-center sales in FY2027–FY2028, with networking, including Ethernet and InfiniBand, plus software and services comprising most of the remainder. Citi expects hyperscalers to represent about 49% of NVIDIA's business, while AI clouds, industrial and enterprise markets make up the other 51%. The report also raises its broader accelerator-market assumptions. Merchant GPUs are expected to remain the larger unit mix through 2025–2027, before ASICs lead in units beginning in 2028. Citi raises merchant-GPU unit CAGR for 2025–2030 to 29% from 27%, while ASIC unit CAGR increases to 55% from 50% as additional ASIC programs come online, particularly around 2027. Combined AI-accelerator units are projected to grow at a 41% CAGR from 2025 to 2030, versus 36% previously. Although ASIC unit growth is faster, merchant GPUs are forecast to retain more than 70% of accelerator sales because their ASPs are estimated at three to seven times those of ASICs. Citi projects 2025–2028 merchant-GPU sales CAGR of 28% to $712B and ASIC sales CAGR of 69% to $269B; combined accelerator sales reach $980B by 2030, above the prior $866B estimate. Its data-center semiconductor TAM estimate rises to about $1.6T by 2030, with GPU/custom ASIC including memory representing $980B, networking $343B and other components $255B. Citi lifts FY2027, FY2028 and FY2029 EPS by 1%, 2% and 2%, respectively, on higher sales. It maintains Buy and a $300 target price, but lowers the valuation multiple used to about 24x calendar-2027 earnings from 28x previously to reflect lower market multiples. Citi states that 24x is in line with NVIDIA's three-year average.

Analysis framework

Citi compares its quarterly revenue, EPS, data-center growth and operating assumptions with Street consensus, then links the forecast to product-ramp indicators and updated CoWoS capacity assumptions. It separately assesses financing exposure by distinguishing contingent guarantees, equity stakes and third-party funding from on-balance-sheet debt, and extends the analysis into GPU unit, ASP, product-mix and AI accelerator TAM forecasts before applying a P/E multiple to calendar-2027 earnings power.

Methodology notes

  • Industry AnalysisSupply-demand framework

GPU unit forecasts based on B300 and Rubin ramps, memory availability and CoWoS estimates.

The report uses expected supply capacity and demand for AI compute to determine product volumes, deployment timing and the effect of memory constraints.

  • Industry AnalysisVolume-price decomposition

AI GPU sales revision despite lower unit assumptions because of higher blended ASPs.

Citi separates volume from pricing, arguing that higher memory-related ASPs can more than offset reduced GPU unit estimates.

  • Valuation methodsP/E and PEG Valuation

Target price based on approximately 24x calendar-2027 earnings power.

The target price is derived by applying a P/E multiple to projected earnings, with the selected multiple described as in line with the three-year average.
