Report Interpretation

Overview

This earnings review argues that Spotify's near-term user-growth and margin concerns reflect deliberate investment and should not obscure a multi-layered long-term opportunity across premium pricing, underpenetrated regions and new audio monetization products.

Core views

Spotify reported broadly in-line 2Q26 results, with strong profitability despite a modest MAU miss. Total MAUs were 777 million, up 12% year on year and 2% sequentially, versus guidance of 778 million; Premium Subscribers rose 9% year on year to 300 million, above the 299 million guide. Revenue was €4.78 billion, up 14% year on year reported and 15% FX-neutral, while gross margin reached a record 33.4%, up 193 basis points year on year and above 33.1% guidance. Operating income was €655 million, ahead of €630 million guidance, and free cash flow was €797 million, up 14% year on year. Management's 3Q26 guide calls for 788 million MAUs, 305 million Premium Subscribers, €5.0 billion revenue, 32.9% gross margin and €670 million operating income. The report interprets relatively light Q3 MAU and margin guidance as investment-driven rather than a deterioration in Spotify's medium-term outlook. It attributes user softness to under-monetized developing markets, an initiative to right-size and quality-control the installed base, and a broader internet-platform trend; Bernstein expects this dynamic to reverse in Q4. Content, feature-development and marketing investment are viewed as controllable. Even with these expenses, Q3 guidance implies more than 40% incremental gross margin, reinforcing Bernstein's confidence in the high end of management's 2030 targets. Bernstein modestly reduces its EBIT outlook by about 1% for margin pressure from proactive content and product investment, but reiterates Outperform. The core growth case rests on both volume and pricing. Bernstein estimates current Spotify Premium TAM at about $107 billion, with Developed Europe, North America and Asia the largest markets. It sees substantial remaining volume potential in underpenetrated Asia, Southeast Asia and Emerging Europe, while recent ad-supported-tier initiatives in India and Indonesia support the opportunity. However, the report considers pricing power the more important lever: outside superfan monetization, TAM can grow through Premium conversion or price increases, and Bernstein expects the latter to have the greater impact. Its income-adjusted pricing analysis suggests lower-income-scaled prices in some markets may indicate further monetization headroom; it also notes North American pricing is lower than Sweden and Europe across income quintiles. Spotify's engagement is presented as evidence that monetization can rise. Users averaged more than about 16 active days per month over the last twelve months, nearly matching YouTube engagement and reaching around 1.5 times YouTube Music's engagement. Yet Spotify ranks last in average revenue per DAU among the compared platforms, despite engagement close to YouTube's, which Bernstein sees as room for further pricing and monetization. The platform also spans devices and listening contexts: just under half of usage comes from devices other than mobile, and about 20% comes from outside phones and computers. The report sees the 2026 product roadmap moving toward commercialization. Audiobooks+ has surpassed a $100 million ARR run-rate; Reserved has facilitated nearly 100,000 ticket reservations; prompted playlists have reached 14 million users; and AI-powered experiences reach roughly one-quarter of active users. Bernstein ranks Audiobooks+/tiers as the most immediate financial opportunity, followed by Personal Podcasts and creator memberships. The superfan framework is becoming more concrete but is still at least two quarters from contributing to revenue growth. Audiobook tiering, podcast a-la-carte transactions and eventual creator memberships are identified as nearer-term monetization opportunities. Margins and cash generation remain central to the thesis. Premium ARPU was €4.89 in 2Q26, up 7% year on year, mainly reflecting pricing benefits partly offset by product and geographic mix. Premium gross margin was 34.9%, up 174 basis points, while ad-supported gross margin reached 19.1%, up 179 basis points. Bernstein forecasts operating margin rising from 12.8% in 2025 to 19.3% in 2028, and estimates 61% year-on-year EBIT growth in 3Q26 and 32% EBIT growth for 2026E. FX remains a reporting variable: it reduced 2Q reported revenue growth by roughly 70 basis points, while management's 3Q revenue guide assumes about a 200-basis-point year-on-year FX tailwind. Bernstein values Spotify at $625 per share using a two-stage discounted free-cash-flow model, with detailed quarterly forecasts over three years, annual forecasts for the following five years and a terminal perpetuity. The model uses an 11% weighted average cost of capital and 3.0% terminal free-cash-flow growth rate.

Analysis framework

Bernstein combines Q2 actuals and management guidance with regional penetration and income-adjusted pricing analysis, engagement and revenue-per-DAU comparisons, product-roadmap adoption indicators, financial forecasts and a two-stage DCF valuation. It separates reported from constant-currency performance when assessing growth and margins.

Impact & implications

Bernstein's conclusion is that near-term investment and FX effects may complicate reported growth and margins, but pricing, regional penetration and product commercialization can expand monetization while operating leverage supports a higher long-term margin profile.

Risks

  • Subscriber churn following price increases could weaken monetization.
  • Delays to the superfan-tier launch could defer incremental revenue.
  • Slower video adoption by creators could limit product-roadmap execution.
  • Geopolitical risks and currency fluctuations could affect results.

What to watch

  • Whether MAU softness reverses in Q4 as Bernstein expects.
  • 3Q26 delivery against guidance for 788 million MAUs, 305 million Premium Subscribers, €5.0 billion revenue, 32.9% gross margin and €670 million operating income.
  • The pace of Premium pricing and ARPU growth, particularly in under-monetized markets.
  • Commercial adoption of Audiobooks+, podcast products, creator memberships, AI features and superfan monetization.
