Report Interpretation

Overview

J.P. Morgan downgrades Monday.com to Neutral from Overweight, arguing that weaker top-of-funnel demand, declining net-new ARR momentum and modest AI monetization make a sustained growth reacceleration unclear. While the company retains strengths in larger customer cohorts, operating discipline and early AI adoption, the firm believes valuation alone is unlikely to become a catalyst until AI ARR becomes material or down-market momentum visibly improves.

Core views

J.P. Morgan's central concern is that Monday.com's previously strong growth is becoming harder to sustain because funnel creation and monetization have weakened. The firm notes that 2Q26 results were solid at face value—revenue rose 22% year on year and pro-forma operating margin reached 17%, versus 13% consensus—but implied net-new ARR fell by double digits. Net retention also weakened across customer cohorts, with NDR declining from 110% in 1Q to 109% in 2Q. In J.P. Morgan's view, this combination points to pressure both in adding new customers and in upselling the installed base. Partner checks reinforce this assessment. J.P. Morgan reports longer sales cycles among SMB and mid-market customers, driven by more decision-maker touchpoints, tighter scrutiny of incremental software spending, and customer evaluation of products offered directly by frontier LLM providers. Partners described leads as flat year on year and have begun obtaining Claude partner certifications to diversify beyond Monday.com. The report expects these conditions, together with execution demands following the company's 20% July reduction in force, to remain headwinds to net-new ARR growth. The firm's earnings outlook reflects a slower trajectory. Monday.com's 3Q26 revenue guidance of $368-370 million implies 16-17% year-on-year growth, down from 22% growth in 1Q26. Management maintained full-year guidance of $1.466-1.474 billion, with a $1.47 billion midpoint and 19% growth for 2026; this implies mid-teens growth in 2H26 after growth above 20% in 1H26. J.P. Morgan models the guide-implied slowdown in 2H26 and expects a further moderation in 2027, which also slows free-cash-flow growth and could create greater cash-flow pressure if net-new ARR continues to decelerate. AI is a potential offset but is not yet financially meaningful, according to the report. AI ARR doubled quarter on quarter in 2Q26 and accounted for 17% of net-new ARR, supported by more than 1.7 million agent interactions, over 98 million AI Blocks actions, roughly 3 million Sidekick conversations and more than 180,000 Notetaker hours since product launch. Customers are using included credit allotments and buying top-ups under the seat-and-credit model, creating a possible expansion route beyond human seats. However, 2Q AI net-new ARR was less than 1% of total ARR, so J.P. Morgan does not expect it to change total-company financials until it becomes a material and accelerating driver of net-new ARR. The report distinguishes between relative resilience among larger customers and broader down-market softness. ARR growth among customers spending more than $100,000 was stronger, suggesting that pressure is more acute in early-funnel customers than in accounts farther along the monetization path. Nonetheless, more than 85% of ARR remains in Work Management and more than 55% comes from customers spending below $50,000. J.P. Morgan views this SMB and mid-market concentration, alongside lower enterprise penetration and the perceived disruptibility of workflow-management software by AI, as limiting visibility into a multi-year expansion. J.P. Morgan acknowledges that the July workforce reduction could free resources for product differentiation and AI investment, and that better execution through organizational change could improve profitability and free cash flow. Its estimates show adjusted EPS rising to $5.55 in 2026E from a prior $4.80 and to $6.24 in 2027E from $5.88. But the firm still revises its broader view to reflect an unclear growth path and believes the stock's decline does not itself establish a catalyst. The shares were down 43% year to date in the report narrative, while the performance table showed a 46.4% year-to-date decline. For valuation, J.P. Morgan establishes a Dec-27 target price of $87, compared with a prior Dec-26 target of $90. The target uses an approximately 8x EV/unlevered FCF multiple applied to its CY28E unlevered FCF forecast of $343 million. That multiple is below the approximately 9x average for a comparison group of collaboration and SMB/mid-market software peers—Zoom, DocuSign, Asana, HubSpot, GitLab, Adobe, Intuit and Dropbox—because the firm sees retention and medium-to-long-term growth uncertainty from the concentrated down-market business, while AI revenue remains nascent. At the $79.05 reference price, the report's target math indicates 10% implied change.

Analysis framework

J.P. Morgan combines recent quarterly results and management guidance with partner checks on customer demand and sales cycles. It evaluates ARR, net-new ARR, NDR, customer cohorts, AI usage and monetization to assess the growth outlook, then links that outlook to free-cash-flow estimates and an EV/unlevered-FCF peer-multiple valuation.

Methodology notes

  • Industry AnalysisSupply-demand framework

Assessment of funnel creation, sales cycles, customer demand and conversion into net-new ARR.

The report uses partner feedback and operating indicators to judge whether demand and customer conversion can support future revenue growth.

  • Corporate Fundamentals and FinanceFree cash flow analysis

Forecasting unlevered free cash flow and assessing the effect of slower ARR growth on cash-flow growth.

J.P. Morgan forecasts CY28E unlevered FCF of $343 million and treats the pace of ARR growth as an important driver of future cash generation.

  • Valuation methodsEV/EBITDA valuation

Enterprise-value multiple valuation using EV/unlevered free cash flow.

The report applies an approximately 8x EV/uFCF multiple to Monday.com's CY28E unlevered FCF, discounted to the peer group's approximately 9x average because of growth and retention uncertainty.

Impact & implications

J.P. Morgan believes Monday.com needs clearer evidence of improved down-market demand, funnel conversion and AI ARR scale before investors are likely to reward its valuation. Stronger AI monetization, enterprise expansion, marketing productivity or cost execution could improve the growth and cash-flow outlook, but the current view remains constrained by retention, competition and sales-cycle risks.

Risks

  • AI monetization or enterprise expansion could accelerate more than expected, improving growth and investor perception.
  • Better execution through organizational changes and stronger cost discipline could lift profitability and free cash flow above expectations.
  • Demand stabilization, better marketing productivity or renewed multi-product adoption could reaccelerate growth and support multiple expansion.
  • A more intense competitive landscape or successful replication of Monday.com's functionality could weaken growth.
  • Persistent funnel-creation difficulty, weak lead generation or slower new-customer monetization could cause ARR and revenue to miss expectations.
  • AI-native competitors or frontier LLM providers could pressure retention, expansion and valuation if Monday.com's AI monetization remains modest.
  • Further NDR moderation or insufficient multi-product expansion could keep the growth trajectory under pressure.

What to watch

  • Whether SMB and mid-market sales cycles, lead generation and funnel creation improve.
  • The pace of net-new ARR, NDR and expansion among early-stage customer cohorts.
  • Whether AI ARR becomes a material and accelerating contributor to net-new ARR.
  • Progress in enterprise expansion and growth among customers spending more than $100,000.
  • Execution and cost discipline following the 20% workforce reduction.
  • Management's ability to sustain multi-product adoption beyond Work Management.
