Report interpretation
Overview
The report assesses Luster LightTech's 2Q26 results, divergent trends across downstream businesses, progress in embodied intelligence and AI infrastructure, and the impact of an improving product mix on earnings forecasts and valuation. It concludes that revenue recognition was slower than expected, but order trends, gross margin, and new-business progress were relatively positive. As the current valuation already reflects some of the improvement and the share issuance creates dilution, Goldman Sachs maintains its Neutral rating and Rmb40.1 target price.
Core views
Luster LightTech announced its 2Q26 results after the market close on August 27. Revenue, gross profit, EBIT, and net profit were Rmb854mn, Rmb337mn, Rmb61mn, and Rmb457mn, respectively, representing yoy growth of 13%, 25%, 84%, and 463%, and qoq growth of 43%, 33%, 130%, and 129%, respectively. Relative to Goldman Sachs' prior forecasts, they were 16% below, 15% below, 40% above, and 1% below, respectively. EPS was Rmb0.95, up 442% yoy and 129% qoq, and 1% below forecast. Including investment gains, gross margin, operating margin, and net margin were 39%, 7%, and 53%, respectively, up 4, 3, and 43 percentage points yoy and changing by -3, +3, and +20 percentage points qoq, respectively. Compared with Goldman Sachs' forecasts, gross margin was in line, while operating margin and net margin were 3 and 8 percentage points higher, respectively. Thus, the results combined weaker-than-expected revenue, broadly in-line profit, and better-than-expected margins. The revenue weakness was mainly attributed to the recognition schedule rather than insufficient orders. 1H26 revenue grew only 6% yoy, but VAT-inclusive orders during the same period reached Rmb2,176mn, up more than 20% yoy. Management further raised its FY26 new-order growth target from 20% yoy to approximately 30%. In the model, revenue forecasts for 2026E, 2027E, and 2028E are Rmb3,566.0mn, Rmb4,172.5mn, and Rmb4,730.0mn, respectively, below the previous forecasts of Rmb3,822.0mn, Rmb4,467.9mn, and Rmb5,161.4mn, reflecting the recent slowdown in revenue recognition. Nevertheless, order growth still provides a foundation for subsequent revenue conversion. 1H26 machine vision revenue was Rmb1,137mn, up 4% yoy. Consumer electronics, printing, lithium batteries, new-generation flat-panel displays, Yuanke Vision, semiconductors, and AI infrastructure contributed 44%, 16%, 9%, 6%, 5%, 5%, and 3% of machine vision revenue, respectively, as downstream conditions continued to diverge. Consumer electronics revenue was flat in the first half, but management expects the segment to grow 20%-30% in 2027E, based on significant form-factor changes and more complex designs in Apple's 2027 product pipeline. Driven by accelerating capital expenditure on OLED panels, 1H26 orders for new-generation flat-panel displays grew 35% yoy. Orders for AOI products jointly developed with BOE are expected to expand from approximately Rmb1mn in 2025 to approximately Rmb100mn in FY26. Lithium battery business revenue grew 120% yoy, while orders increased by more than 170%, mainly driven by new demand from CATL and EVE for battery-cell appearance and electrode inspection. The embodied intelligence business is expanding from standalone optical motion-capture equipment to multimodal products covering first-person-view data, UMI universal manipulation interface data, and tactile data collection. The average selling price per system increased from Rmb0.2mn-Rmb0.3mn to approximately Rmb1mn. Revenue from Yuanke Vision's FZMotion grew by more than 80% yoy in 1H26, with data-collection revenue approximately doubling. Luster LightTech's end-of-line inspection solution for humanoid robot mass-production lines also significantly improved efficiency: the time required to perform 160 tests per unit fell from four hours to 15 minutes, staffing declined from eight people to two, and daily offline inspection volume increased from 20 units to more than 100 units. The next objective is to enter industrial settings, enabling humanoid robots to collect and learn from data while working on-site, leveraging the company's accumulated expertise in factory environments and its relationships with customers such as CATL and Foxconn. The AI infrastructure business achieved a breakthrough from zero to one. Optical-module AOI, AI server assembly and liquid-cooling inspection, energy-storage system inspection, and AR/AI glasses inspection contributed close to Rmb30mn of revenue in aggregate in 1H26. In optical-module AOI, the company secured a small-volume order for Luxshare's Google project, which is expected to contribute approximately Rmb100mn of revenue in 2027E, while the Innolight project remains in the sample-delivery stage. In AI servers, as Foxconn expands capacity in Taiwan, China, Mexico, and the United States, related revenue increased from approximately Rmb1mn in 2025 to approximately Rmb10mn in 2026. Management plans to shift its focus in 2027E toward upstream components requiring greater precision, such as liquid-cooling plates, PCBs, and connectors, targeting aggregate revenue of more than Rmb100mn. Margin improvement stems from product-mix upgrades, the exit from low-margin categories, and a higher contribution from high-margin AI products. The company reduced its number of SKUs from more than 130 to 80. Gross margin in the core machine vision business has reached approximately 45%, significantly above the 25%-30% margin in the optical communications distribution business. 1H26 consolidated gross margin was 40.7%, up 5.0 percentage points yoy. Meanwhile, the company's Zhipu equity stake generated a Rmb589mn fair-value gain in 1H26, offsetting the revenue shortfall and leaving net profit broadly in line with expectations. Management expects FY26 net profit excluding non-recurring items to continue growing faster than revenue. Goldman Sachs raised its 2026E-2030E net profit forecasts by 3%-9%, citing improvements in product mix and margins. EPS revisions were as high as 5%, while also incorporating an approximately 4% increase in the share count following the JAI acquisition-related share issuance. The 12-month target price remains Rmb40.1 because the earnings forecast upgrades were offset by share dilution. The target price comprises two components: Rmb32.3 per share for the core business, based on 30 times 2030E P/E discounted to 2027E using an 11.5% cost of equity; and Rmb7.8 per share for the company's 0.42% stake in Zhipu, based on the Goldman Sachs China Internet team's DCF valuation and discounted to 2027E. From a long-term perspective, Goldman Sachs expects Luster LightTech to achieve moderate share gains in traditional machine vision systems by leveraging its solution capabilities for major customers and some self-developed software, cameras, and lenses. High-growth businesses such as energy storage, new energy, AI servers, and optical modules are expected to continue optimizing product mix and margins. Since 2025, FZMotion's exposure to humanoid robot data collection has increased, creating a second growth driver beyond the core machine vision business. However, Goldman Sachs believes the current valuation already reflects some improvement in business mix and the option value related to humanoid robots. Based on the August 28, 2026 closing price of Rmb48.10, the Rmb40.1 target price implies 16.6% downside, and the report therefore maintains its Neutral rating.
Analysis framework
The report first compares 2Q26 revenue, profit, EPS, and margins item by item with the prior-year period, the previous quarter, and Goldman Sachs' forecasts. It then uses the divergence between 1H26 revenue and order growth to determine that the revenue weakness mainly resulted from the recognition schedule. Next, it breaks down growth drivers across consumer electronics, display panels, lithium batteries, embodied intelligence, and AI infrastructure, and assesses execution pathways using customer projects, order stages, average selling prices, and inspection efficiency. Finally, the report incorporates product-mix improvement, one-off investment gains, dilution from the share issuance, and earnings forecast revisions into its valuation, deriving the target price by combining a P/E valuation of the core business with a DCF valuation of the Zhipu equity stake.
Methodology notes
Separate valuations of the core business and Zhipu equity stake
The report adds Rmb32.3 per share for Luster LightTech's core business to Rmb7.8 per share for its 0.42% stake in Zhipu, deriving a 12-month target price of Rmb40.1.
Discounted forward P/E valuation
The core business valuation applies 30 times 2030E P/E and discounts it to 2027E using an 11.5% cost of equity to reflect the current value of forward earnings.
DCF valuation of the Zhipu equity stake
Based on the Goldman Sachs China Internet team's DCF valuation of Zhipu, the report calculates the value of Luster LightTech's 0.42% equity stake and discounts it to 2027E.
Distinguishing operating profit improvement from fair-value investment gains
The report distinguishes gross margin improvement from a better product mix from the Rmb589mn fair-value gain on the Zhipu equity stake, explaining that the sharp net profit growth did not come entirely from core-business revenue while also assessing whether net profit excluding non-recurring items can sustainably grow faster than revenue.

Impact & implications
The report believes the key tension in near-term financial performance is the slow conversion of orders into revenue rather than a broad weakening in demand. Profit is supported by product-mix upgrades, the exit from low-margin SKUs, and gains on the Zhipu equity stake. Display panels, lithium batteries, embodied intelligence, and AI infrastructure projects provide multiple sources of future growth, but the projects remain at different stages, including mass production, sample delivery, and conversion from small-volume orders to scaled revenue. The earnings forecast upgrades did not translate into a higher target price because the approximately 4% increase in the share count from the JAI acquisition-related share issuance offset the net profit improvement. Goldman Sachs recognizes the long-term growth potential but believes the current valuation already incorporates some product-mix improvement and humanoid robot option value, and therefore maintains its Neutral view.
